\u201cWhat C.S. Lewis Can Help Us Understand About Jesus Christ and Joseph Smith\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
My love for the writing of C. S. Lewis is of long standing. \u00a0Here, for instance, is a blog entry that I posted back on 8 February \u00a02012:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve recently finished re-reading C. S. Lewis\u2019s \u201cChronicles of Narnia\u201d \u2014 I must have read them at least two or three times on my own, many years ago, and then read them aloud, individually, to each of my three sons when they were very young, but haven\u2019t re-read them in quite a few years \u2014 and I\u2019m still very impressed with them.<\/span><\/p>\nIn fact, I\u2019ve set out on a program of re-reading Lewis\u2019s works as a whole, and I find that he holds up very well. \u00a0Thus far, I\u2019ve re-read not only the Narnia tales, but The Screwtape Letters<\/i>, The Great Divorce<\/i>, Surprised by Joy<\/i>, and Out of the Silent Planet<\/i>. \u00a0Right now, I\u2019m about a third of the way through Perelandra<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\nC. S. Lewis passed away from renal failure on 22 November 1963, the very same day on which Aldous Huxley and John F. Kennedy also died. \u00a0(Because of the Kennedy assassination, his death was scarcely noticed.) \u00a0I can\u2019t help but think, in some ways, that he represents the greatest loss of the three.<\/span><\/p>\nI\u2019ve been a fan since my high school years, and have even had lunch, with my family, in The Eagle and Child, the Oxford pub where Lewis and his friends J. R. R. Tolkien and Charles Williams and Dorothy Sayers used to meet as \u201cThe Inklings\u201d in order to read their works-in-progress to each other. \u00a0I\u2019ve also had the marvelous opportunity to have spent time \u2014 though not enough of it \u2014 in the \u00a0Marion Wade Center at Wheaton College, in Illinois, which archives wonderful collections of materials related to \u201cThe Inklings,\u201d as well as to Owen Barfield, George MacDonald, and G. K. Chesterton. \u00a0(While there, I put my hand into the wardrobe through which Lucy first entered Narnia. \u00a0But, unfortunately, all I felt was the wooden back of the wardrobe closet. \u00a0No snow.)<\/span><\/p>\nIf there are any out there who haven\u2019t yet really made the acquaintance of C. S. Lewis, I have to say that I envy you. \u00a0And I commend him enthusiastically to you. \u00a0He is a great pleasure to read, but also deeply insightful and wonderfully imaginative. \u00a0I wish that I could discover him for the first time all over again. \u00a0That said, though, my re-readings have been extremely enjoyable, and I\u2019m seeing things in his books that I had never noticed before. \u00a0If you\u2019ve already read Lewis, read him again. \u00a0If you\u2019ve only read a little, read more.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
