Kent Brown\u2019s important volume <em>The Testimony of Luke<\/em> (Provo: BYU Studies, 2015), which is part of the ongoing project of producing a multivolume, multiauthor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.byunewtestamentcommentary.com\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cBrigham Young University New Testament Commentary\u201d<\/a> and which offers this comment:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">The first, clear impression, of course, is that the two records differ notably. \u00a0Whereas Matthew\u2019s is a descending genealogy, tracing Jesus\u2019 ancestry down from Abraham and through David, Luke\u2019s is ascending, tracing Jesus\u2019 ancestry up all the way to Adam. \u00a0Matthew records the names of forty-two male ancestors between Abraham and Jesus, Luke sets down fifty-five between the two. \u00a0Matthew follows Jesus\u2019 descent from David through the kingly line, beginning with Solomon, but Luke traces the Savior\u2019s progenitors through Nathan, another son of David. \u00a0Matthew\u2019s table rests on the number fourteen, multiplied three times; Luke\u2019s list rests on the number seven, multiplied eleven times. \u00a0Matthew\u2019s genealogy aims to demonstrate that Jesus is the king of Israel, descended from David through the line of kings. \u00a0In fact, Matthew enhances this objective by the repetition of the number fourteen, which represents David, whose name, when reduced to numerical equivalencies in Hebrew, adds up to fourteen (D + V + D [<em>daleth<\/em> + <em>waw<\/em> + <em>daleth<\/em>] equals 4 + 6 + 4). \u00a0In contrast, Luke\u2019s genealogy seeks not only to tie Jesus to Adam, and thus to all humankind, but also to further establish his place as God\u2019s son, a concept already revealed in Luke 1-2. \u00a0(215)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s another worthwhile comment from Kent Brown\u2019s commentary regarding Luke 3:23:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Luke\u2019s note alone establishes the beginning of Jesus\u2019 ministry. \u00a0According to Numbers 4:3, when a descendant of Aaron reaches thirty years of age, all things being settled, he is then permitted to officiate at the temple (see also Num. 4:47). \u00a0A connection to David may also lie in this expression because, according to 2 Samuel 5:4, \u201cDavid was thirty years old when he began to reign.\u201d \u00a0In this connection, Judah ben Tema, a rabbinic authority of the second century AD, taught that \u201cat thirty\u201d a person is fit \u201cfor authority.\u201d \u00a0(213)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, for those who have worried about what became of Mary\u2019s husband, the Savior\u2019s adoptive father, the Joseph Smith Translation adds a phrase right after Luke 3:23\u2019s \u201cthirty years of age\u201d \u2014 \u201chaving lived with his father\u201d \u2014 that suggests the possibility that Joseph lived long enough to see at least the beginning of Jesus\u2019 public ministry. \u00a0By the time of the crucifixion, though, he seems to be gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Matthew 1:2-17 Luke 3:23-38 \u00a0 Most people simply skim or even skip over the genealogies provided for Jesus in Matthew 1 and Luke 3. \u00a0Those who don\u2019t, however, frequently wonder about the differences between them. \u00a0 I draw here on S.
