Kent Brown, \u201cBiblical Egypt:\u00a0Land of Refuge, Land of Bondage\u201d <em>Ensign<\/em> (September 1980)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 2:16 cites as prophecy a statement taken from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/ot\/hosea\/11.1?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hosea 11:1<\/a>: \u00a0\u201cOut of Egypt have I called my son.\u201d \u00a0In its original context, it clearly refers to the exodus from Egypt of the people of Israel as a whole. \u00a0This offers an interesting perspective on Matthew\u2019s overall approach; plainly, he sees the history of Israel as somehow foreshadowing the life of Christ. \u00a0Or, to put it another way, he regards Jesus as, in some sense, recapitulating the story of the Hebrews. \u00a0At least in part.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69799\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69799\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/01\/herods-family-tree.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-69799\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/01\/herods-family-tree.png\" alt=\"Helping to keep things straight\" width=\"597\" height=\"436\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The family tree of Herod the Great and his immediate descendants<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s sometimes rather difficult to keep the various \u201cHerods\u201d of the New Testament straight. \u00a0In the passages for today, we\u2019re concerned with only two of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first, of course, is Herod the Great \u2014 who was, as everybody should realize, only \u201cgreat\u201d in terms of his ambition and his vast building activity, certainly not in terms of his character or his success as a family man. \u00a0He dies in Matthew 2:19.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The second is Herod Archaelaus (23 BC-ca. 18 AD), who is mentioned in Matthew 2:22. \u00a0Joseph\u2019s reluctance to go back from Egypt to living under his rule is entirely understandable: He\u00a0was legendarily cruel. \u00a0He ruled as the\u00a0ethnarch<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0of\u00a0Samaria,\u00a0Judea, and Idumea (the biblical\u00a0Edom), including the cities of\u00a0Caesarea\u00a0and\u00a0Jaffa, for roughly nine years\u00a0(ca.\u00a04 BC to 6 AD). \u00a0This was roughly one half of the territory ruled by his father. \u00a0However, Herod Archelaus\u2019s gross brutality, coupled with egregious and offensive violations of the Law of Moses, caused his Jewish subjects to lodge a formal complaint with the Roman Emperor Augustus. \u00a0Accordingly, Archelaus was deposed in 6 AD and banished to\u00a0Vienne,\u00a0in\u00a0Gaul. \u00a0At that point, the province of Judaea\u00a0was formed and placed under direct Roman rule.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The prophecy to which Matthew 2:23 alludes (\u201cHe shall be called a Nazarene\u201d) does not appear in the Old Testament. \u00a0Was Matthew aware of a text that is now lost to us, but which he took to be genuine scripture? \u00a0If so, this passage represents a potentially interesting challenge to people who insist on the completeness and sole-sufficiency of the Bible as we currently have it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Luke 2:40 (\u201cThe child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him\u201d) is a powerful reminder of the humanity of Jesus, which should not be forgotten in the overpowering light of his divinity.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Matthew 2:13-23 Luke 2:39-40 \u00a0 In the Bible \u2014 in the Old Testament, anyway \u2014 Egypt is often a threat. \u00a0But it also figures more than once as a place of sanctuary. \u00a0On this topic, see S.
