John 1:19-23<\/a><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Again, I want to stress that the Isaianic prophecy \u2014 cited most fully by Luke 3:4-5, but mentioned in all of the gospels \u2014 refers to John as the advance guard or herald of a \u201croyal progress,\u201d assigned not to level all of the mountains and valleys of Earth but, speaking figuratively, to prepare the road that the king, the messiah, would travel in order to greet his people and inaugurate his rule. \u00a0The roadway is to be upgraded, smoothed, leveled, and straightened out, and bridges are to be built:<\/span><\/p>\n4\u00a0<\/span>As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n
\u201cA voice of one calling in the wilderness,<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u2018Prepare the way for the Lord,<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>make straight paths for him.<\/span><\/span><\/strong>
\n5\u00a0<\/span>Every valley shall be filled in,<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>every mountain and hill made low.<\/span><\/span><\/strong>
\nThe crooked roads shall become straight,<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>the rough ways smooth.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Finally, from the rather distinct account of the fourth gospel:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
19\u00a0<\/span>Now this was John\u2019s testimony when the Jewish leaders\u00a0in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.<\/span>\u00a020\u00a0<\/span>He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, \u201cI am not the Messiah.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n21\u00a0<\/span>They asked him, \u201cThen who are you? Are you Elijah?\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nHe said, \u201cI am not.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\u201cAre you the Prophet?\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nHe answered, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n22\u00a0<\/span>Finally they said, \u201cWho are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n23\u00a0<\/span>John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, \u201cI am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, \u2018Make straight the way for the Lord.\u2019\u201d \u00a0(John 1:19-23, <\/span>New<\/span> International Version)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
