\u201cMessengers of the Covenant:\u00a0Mormon\u2019s Doctrinal Use of\u00a0Malachi 3:1 in Moroni 7:29\u201332\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Abstract:<\/strong>\u00a0Although not evident at first glance, shared terminology and phraseology in Malachi 3:1 (3\u00a0Nephi\u00a024:1) and Moroni 7:29\u201332 suggest textual dependency of the latter on the former. Jesus\u2019s dictation of Malachi\u00a03\u20134 to the Lamanites and Nephites at the temple in Bountiful, as recorded and preserved on the plates of Nephi, helped provide Mormon a\u00a0partial scriptural and doctrinal basis for his teachings on the ministering of angels, angels\/messengers of the covenant, the \u201cwork\u201d of \u201cthe covenants of the Father,\u201d and \u201cprepar[ing] the way\u201d in his sermon as preserved in Moroni\u00a07. This article explores the implications of Mormon\u2019s use of Malachi\u00a03:1. It further explores the meaning of the name Malachi (\u201c[Yahweh is] my messenger,\u201d \u201cmy angel\u201d) in its ancient Israelite scriptural context and the temple context within which Jesus uses it in 3\u00a0Nephi\u00a024:1.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
