He wrote his dissertation on Paul Tillich, a German-American theologian and political theorist who was then at the height of his fame and influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">Eventually, Midgley also became interested in contemporary Roman Catholic theology and the writings of Leo Strauss and other Jewish philosophers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">In 1996, Midgley concluded nearly four decades of teaching at Brigham Young University the history of political and legal philosophy. Shortly thereafter, he returned with his wife to Auckland, New Zealand, where they directed the Lorne Street LDS Institute of Religion for two years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">In the meantime, though, beginning with its first issue in 1989, Midgley had become a regular contributor to the <em>FARMS Review<\/em>, ultimately serving as one of its associate editors until it was abruptly terminated in 2012. Shortly thereafter, he joined the executive board of the newly launched Interpreter Foundation, of which I am chairman and where he continues to serve and to publish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">Over many years, he has shown particular interest in questions about the relationship between LDS claims and historical writings. Reflecting that interest, among his signature contributions have been studies of the scriptural concept of \u201cremembrance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">\u201cRemembrance\u201d is, Midgley admits in \u201cThe Ways of Remembrance\u201d (online at\u00a0<a class=\"sense-link decorated-link\" style=\"color: #808000;\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.mi.byu.edu\/fullscreen\/?pub=1111&amp;index=16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-contentid=\"561353\">publications.mi.byu.edu<\/a>), an ordinary word, and its repetition in the Book of Mormon \u2014 where terms related to \u201cremembering\u201d and \u201cforgetting\u201d occur well over 200 times \u2014 is easy to overlook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">However, \u201cBy placing emphasis on the concept of \u2018remembering,\u2019 the Book of Mormon significantly captures one of the most distinctive aspects of Israelite mentality,\u201d he writes in \u201c\u2018<a class=\"sense-link decorated-link\" style=\"color: #808000;\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.mi.byu.edu\/fullscreen\/?pub=1110&amp;index=35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-contentid=\"561353\">O Man, Remember, and Perish Not<\/a>\u2019 (Mosiah 4: 30)\u201d (online at\u00a0<a class=\"sense-link decorated-link\" style=\"color: #808000;\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.mi.byu.edu\/fullscreen\/?pub=1110&amp;index=35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-contentid=\"561353\">publications.mi.byu.edu<\/a>). \u201cIt vividly reflects a religious sensitivity on the part of Book of Mormon prophets that is similar to that of other Israelite prophets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">And, says Midgley, paying close attention to what the Book of Mormon says about \u201cthe ways of remembrance\u201d can help us \u201cbetter understand the book\u2019s overall message\u201d (see \u201cThe Ways of Remembrance,\u201d online at\u00a0<a class=\"sense-link decorated-link\" style=\"color: #808000;\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.mi.byu.edu\/fullscreen\/?pub=1111&amp;index=16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-contentid=\"561353\">publications.mi.byu.edu<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">Scripturally, to \u201cremember\u201d God and one\u2019s covenants with God is not merely to recall information, let alone simply to be aware of or curious about the past, although that is obviously a part of the word\u2019s meaning. Rather, it is to be attentive, to consider, and, most importantly, it is to keep God\u2019s commandments and to act accordingly. \u201cIn the Book of Mormon, remembrance results in action,\u201d he writes in \u201cThe Ways of Remembrance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"ds_default_anchor\">\n<div id=\"ds_cpp\" class=\"ds_cpp\" data-dvp_title_trim=\"200\" data-dvp_desc_trim=\"200\" data-dvp_zindex_base=\"80\" data-dvp_mute_ad_na=\"0\" data-dvp_mute_ad=\"1\" data-dvp_friendly_iframe_na=\"0 \">\n<div class=\"ds_cpp_inner\">\n<div class=\"ds_body\">\u00a0<span style=\"color: #808000;\">In fact, this is also the sense given in cases of obedience to legitimate earthly sovereigns: At\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"sense-link decorated-link\" style=\"color: #808000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/alma\/18.10?lang=eng#p9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-contentid=\"561353\">Alma 18:10<\/a><span style=\"color: #808000;\">, for example, King Lamoni praises Ammon as follows: \u201cFor even he doth remember all my commandments to execute them.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">I\u2019ve observed that the sacrament prayers Latter-day Saints still use today actually originated among the Nephites \u2014 and it\u2019s not coincidental, in that light, that we promise in them to \u201calways remember\u201d the Savior and to \u201ckeep his commandments\u201d (<a class=\"sense-link decorated-link\" style=\"color: #808000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/moro\/4?lang=eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-contentid=\"561353\">Moroni 4<\/a>-5; compare\u00a0<a class=\"sense-link decorated-link\" style=\"color: #808000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/3-ne\/18.7-11?lang=eng#p6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-contentid=\"561353\">3 Nephi 18:7-11<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">By contrast, to \u201cforget\u201d in the scriptures isn\u2019t merely a mental glitch but a failure to act in accordance with the commandments of God. Essentially, it\u2019s apostasy. The Book of Mormon writers say of the ancient biblical Israelites that they were \u201cquick to do iniquity, and slow to remember the Lord their God; therefore there was a law given them, yea, a law of performances and of ordinances, a law which they were to observe strictly from day to day, to keep them in remembrance of God and their duty towards him\u201d (<a class=\"sense-link decorated-link\" style=\"color: #808000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/mosiah\/13.29-30?lang=eng#p28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-contentid=\"561353\">Mosiah 13:29-30<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">According to Midgley in \u201c\u2018<a class=\"sense-link decorated-link\" style=\"color: #808000;\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.mi.byu.edu\/fullscreen\/?pub=1110&amp;index=35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-contentid=\"561353\">O Man, Remember, and Perish Not<\/a>\u2019 (Mosiah 4: 30),\u201d \u201cit is evident that \u2018remembering\u2019 is a saving principle of the gospel. Just as faith looks forward in Christ to actualize the present power of his redemption, so remembrance looks back on covenants and gifts from God and keeps the past alive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">Today, as anciently, we need reminders. That\u2019s one of the reasons we\u2019re encouraged to engage in daily scripture study, weekly partaking of the sacrament and regular attendance at the temple, to say nothing of celebrating Pioneer Day and participating in such activities as re-enacted handcart treks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\">\u201cO, remember my son,\u201d said Alma to Helaman, \u201cand learn wisdom in thy youth;
