<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/matt\/4.23?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew 4:23<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/mark\/1.32-39?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark 1:32-39<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/luke\/4.40-44?lang=eng&amp;country=ca\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Luke 4:40-44<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Notice, in the records of the sick people who are healed in the evening at Capernaum, that, of the three synoptic accounts \u2014 John doesn\u2019t mention the incident \u2014 only Matthew says \u201cThis was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah, \u2018He took our infirmities and bore our diseases.'\u201d \u00a0Such observations (\u201cThis was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the mouth of the prophet X\u201d) are characteristic of Matthew\u2019s approach, which is plainly intended to persuade a Jewish audience that Jesus was the messiah. \u00a0Mark and Luke (and, for that matter, John) are far less concerned with that particular matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Latter-day Saints (and others) tend to harmonize the four gospels. \u00a0And, in fact, they\u2019re in pretty good harmony. \u00a0But reading them through separately demonstrates that they\u2019re written to somewhat different audiences and with varying (though broadly consistent) agendas.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mark and Luke describe Jesus as trying \u2014 more or less in vain, on this occasion at least \u2014 to get some peace and quiet from the continual press of the crowds, for prayer and meditation. \u00a0It\u2019s a very human glimpse. \u00a0The mortal Jesus, like us, needed time to think, to recharge his batteries. \u00a0And, as with\u00a0us, it was difficult for him to find time for that basic need.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Matthew 8:14-15 Mark 1:23-31 Luke 4:38-39 \u00a0 The references in all three of the synoptic gospels to Christ\u2019s healing of Simon Peter\u2019s mother-in-law (\u03c0\u03b5\u03bd\u03b8\u03b5\u03c1\u1f70) tell us one thing for an absolute certainty: \u00a0The first pope was married! \u00a0 \u00a0 Note, incidentally, how directly Jesus goes from the synagogue into Peter\u2019s house. \u00a0The two [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1019,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[3346,2625,3007,3343,3349],"class_list":["post-70462","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-capernaum","tag-new-testament","tag-new-testament-commentary","tag-peter","tag-synoptic"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>New Testament Notes 36-40<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"&nbsp;
