I don\u2019t recall, off hand, whether I mentioned yesterday that the latest installment of the biweekly joint Hamblin\/Peterson column had appeared in the Deseret News<\/em>. \u00a0It\u2019s entitled \u201cThe 10 incarnations of Vishnu.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s impossible to miss the strong similarities in the designs of the small new temples that have recently been released for Guam<\/a>, Cabo Verde<\/a>, and Puerto Rico<\/a>. \u00a0Predictably, some have derided them. \u00a0But they clearly reflect President Russell M. Nelson\u2019s desire \u2014 about which I\u2019ve been hearing from well-connected friends for at least a year now \u2014 to build more temples, smaller temples, and thereby bring them closer to the Saints.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always liked stories like this one, which comes out of southeastern Idaho, where a new Latter-day Saint temple is in the works:<\/p>\n

Somehow, yesterday, I came across this new blog<\/a>. \u00a0Some of you may enjoy it:<\/p>\n

During my brief recent visit to St. George, I spoke on Friday evening to a small group. \u00a0It went reasonably well, I think. \u00a0To my enormous surprise, though, one of those in the audience was a lady who had been a member of the old San Gabriel Ward, in which I grew up in southern California. \u00a0She\u2019s in her mid-nineties, and I think that I probably hadn\u2019t seen her in nearly five decades. \u00a0I didn\u2019t even know that she was still alive.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since we arrived a bit early, I had a very good time chatting and reminiscing with her. \u00a0She\u2019s probably the last of the adults in that ward that I remember from my childhood. \u00a0But she was more central than that. \u00a0She and her husband were part of an informal group in our ward \u2014 on the younger end of it \u2014 that was affectionately titled \u201cThe Clique.\u201d \u00a0(My wife and I inherited the fired-clay table settings that my parents each had for their occasional holiday dinners together [a mug and a large plate made by one of the members and marked with the words \u201cThe Clique\u201d and a wagon wheel design].) \u00a0Members of the Clique all had campers or, eventually, RVs \u2014 a big deal, at the time \u2014 and regularly went on trips together. \u00a0And, as a kid, I often went along. \u00a0Through the \u201cMother Lode Country\u201d<\/a> of California. \u00a0A week on the beach at Ventura<\/a> or near\u00a0San Clemente<\/a>. \u00a0Up to Morro Bay<\/a>. \u00a0To the annual rock hound event at Quartzsite, Arizona<\/a>. \u00a0But, curiously, the Clique\u2019s base-away-from-home was unquestionably\u00a0Afton Canyon<\/a>, off to the right of I-15 on the far side of Barstow, California, going from Los Angeles. \u00a0Rock hunting, dirt biking, good meals in the evening, telling stories around campfires. \u00a0Warm memories. \u00a0As I grew up, every time my parents and I drove past the turn-off to Afton Canyon en route to Las Vegas or (more commonly) to Utah we would put our hands over our hearts and observe a moment of mock-reverent silence. \u00a0Later, when my wife and I and our kids traveled that same road, we observed the same tradition. \u00a0And we still do.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

My parents were blessed to have such a group around them. \u00a0And I was blessed to know them, as well. \u00a0\u201cUncle Spencer\u201d and \u201cAunt Laura,\u201d Bob and Viv, Jim and Betty, Pat and Ken \u2014 these people loomed large in my young life. \u00a0They were central to my parents\u2019 lives for decades. \u00a0One by one, though, they passed through the veil, and now they\u2019re all gone, or virtually so. \u00a0Unexpectedly running into one of my parents\u2019 best friends after all these years was a wonderful surprise. \u00a0In the end, such relationships are among the best things this world has to offer.<\/p>\n
