The \"Jesus Boat\"<\/a>
The so-called \u201cJesus boat,\u201d the remains of a first-century Galilean fishing vessel discovered in 1986 when the lake waters dropped during a drought year, is roughly 7.5 feet wide and 27 feet long. Preserved at Kibbutz Ginnosar on the (north)western shore of the Sea of Galilee, it provides an excellent example of what the boats used by Jesus and his disciples probably looked like.

The image of Jesus asleep in the back of the boat, and so soundly<\/em> asleep that even a turbulent\u00a0storm<\/em> doesn\u2019t wake him, is significant. \u00a0It highlights his humanness. \u00a0He was physically exhausted. \u00a0The constant press of crowds, the long and strenuous walks all over Palestine (including substantial\u00a0changes in elevation), the preaching \u2014 all of these took their toll on him. \u00a0And so did healing. \u00a0(Recall the case where he knew that somebody had been healed because he perceived that \u201cvirtue\u201d \u2014 or \u201cstrength\u201d or \u201cpower\u201d \u2014 had gone out of him [Mark 5:30; Luke 8:46].)<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Sea of Galilee is especially prone to sudden and fairly violent storms, for very specific topographical reasons. \u00a0(There\u2019s a concise and clear explanation of the phenomenon\u00a0here<\/a> \u2014 and no, it doesn\u2019t matter that the person doing the explanation\u00a0is a creationist. \u00a0That\u2019s irrelevant; his explanation of this matter is accurate.) \u00a0Luke\u2019s description of\u00a0\u201ca storm of wind [that] came down on the lake\u201d (\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03ad\u03b2\u03b7 \u03bb\u03b1\u1fd6\u03bb\u03b1\u03c8 \u1f00\u03bd\u03ad\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5 \u03b5\u1f30\u03c2 \u03c4\u1f74\u03bd \u03bb\u03af\u03bc\u03bd\u03b7\u03bd) is precisely correct; storms \u201ccome down\u201d onto the Sea of Galilee.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The disciples are still only beginning to grasp who Jesus is. \u00a0I love the amazed question, when he has stilled the storm: \u201cWhat sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The ancient Canaanite storm god Ba\u2018al was, presumably, long since dead and gone from the consciousness of people in the region \u2014 though he lives on, curiously, in modern Arabic, where ba\u2018al<\/em> (\u0628\u0639\u0644) refers to\u00a0unirrigated land or plants that flourish on a natural water supply, without human help. \u00a0But Jesus\u2019 control of the winds and the water demonstrates plainly who the real lord of the elements is. \u00a0And, in its own way, it\u2019s rather dramatic, as Elijah\u2019s much earlier demonstration (in the contest<\/a> on Mount Carmel with the priests of Ba\u2018al) had been.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a remarkable story. \u00a0And the notion that evil spirits desire to be incarnated so badly that they would rather be cast into pigs than be at large is interesting, as well.<\/p>\n
