The new Rome Italy Temple is a remarkable building in very many ways, and it has been drawing unusual attention \u2014 not least from the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> itself. \u00a0\u00a0(Image from LDS Media Library)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I\u2019m delighted at this. \u00a0Despite its notorious current woes, I\u2019m a great admirer of the Catholic Church in many ways and especially of some of its leaders. \u00a0Pope St. John Paul II, whom I once had the opportunity of seeing at fairly close range when I was invited to attend a meeting with him in Rome\u2019s Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, is a particular hero of mine.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And here\u2019s something that\u2019s pretty amazing:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cProphet to Dedicate Rome Italy Temple:\u00a0Entire First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will be present\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t merely highly unusual, it\u2019s literally\u00a0unprecedented<\/em> for every member of the two leading priesthood quorums of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be present for the dedication of a temple.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Why is this temple so very special, in a way, beyond even other temples? \u00a0Partly, I\u2019m sure, because it\u2019s in Rome, where the largest single Christian church has had its seat for many centuries. \u00a0Both churches claim apostolic authority; the statues of the apostles that are located in the new Rome Italy Temple implicitly state our claim. \u00a0But it\u2019s also important because this is our first temple built in a land of the Bible. \u00a0There is no biblical Epistle to the Residents of Manhattan nor any biblical Epistle to the Mexicans. \u00a0But there is an Epistle to the Romans, and strong tradition holds that the both the apostles Peter and Paul gave their lives as martyrs \u2014 \u201cwitnesses\u201d \u2014 in the city of Rome. \u00a0The Lord\u2019s Church is coming home.<\/p>\n
