On Monday night, my wife and I joined with friends for dinner and then, with them, attended a performance of the musical An American in Paris<\/em>. \u00a0The music and lyrics, of course, were by George Gershwin and his brother, Ira. \u00a0And \u2014 needless to say \u2014 they were very good.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The musical stage adaptation itself is of relatively recent vintage, but I enjoyed it. \u00a0And, although I\u2019m scarcely a balletomane, I have to acknowledge the fact that Juliet Doherty<\/a>, who played \u2014 and danced \u2014 the role of Lise, was very, very, very good.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve said it before, but I don\u2019t tire of saying it: \u00a0The Hale Center Theater<\/a> in Orem is a local gem that I really appreciate, and the Hale Centre Theatre<\/a> is an absolute treasure \u2014 particularly in its still fairly new two-stage facility in Sandy. \u00a0If you haven\u2019t ever gone to one of their plays and you live in the area, you should definitely consider doing so.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It helps, of course, that I married a theater major. \u00a0But the fact is that, growing up in southern California, one of my favorite high school dates was dinner followed by a play at the Hales\u2019 Glendale Centre Theatre<\/a>, which had opened its doors in 1947, shortly after the close of the Second World War. \u00a0I\u2019ve always liked live theater. \u00a0My wife has simply guaranteed that I\u2019ve continued to feed my enthusiasm for it.<\/p>\n

Still on theater beat: \u00a0For the last few nights, we\u2019ve been relaxing before the end of the with the Cadfael<\/a><\/em> series, featuring Sir Derek Jacobi in the title role. \u00a0I typically need something to slow my mind down before bedtime \u2014 a good novel, or something of that sort \u2014 lest, otherwise, I simply stay up doing \u201cserious\u201d things until I\u2019ve endangered the next day. \u00a0And both my wife and I are partial to mysteries. \u00a0So having one set in twelfth-century England, at the (no longer existing) Benedictine Abbey in Shrewsbury, is really fun. \u00a0It\u2019s an area that we like and in which we\u2019ve spent some time.<\/p>\n
