John 15:14<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The take-away here, I suppose, isn\u2019t some supposed denigration of his family, or of the family generally, but the indication that Jesus had <em>brothers<\/em>. \u00a0(Presumably <em>half<\/em>-brothers.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This quite clearly seems to work against the idea of Mary\u2019s perpetual virginity, which has become dogma among Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2015\/03\/george-zervos-this-afternoon-at-byu.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">a speaker on campus several years back, George Zervos,<\/a> an Eastern Orthodox priest (I think) who teaches at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, who showed how the dogma of Mary\u2019s perpetual virginity developed in the early centuries of Christianity. \u00a0It was fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19699\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19699\" style=\"width: 482px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/04\/482px-Rembrandt_Christ_in_the_Storm_on_the_Lake_of_Galilee.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19699\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/04\/482px-Rembrandt_Christ_in_the_Storm_on_the_Lake_of_Galilee.jpg\" alt=\"Rembrandt Galilee storm\" width=\"482\" height=\"599\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19699\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cStorm on the Sea of Galilee\u201d \u00a0\u00a0(Rembrandt, 1633)<br>The boat is surely somewhat more elaborate than the one Jesus knew, and the storm probably more dramatic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/matt\/8.23-27\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew 8:23-27<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/mark\/4.35-41?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark 4:35-41<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/luke\/8.22-25\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Luke 8:22-25<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Compare Matthew 8:18<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the most memorable stories in the gospels.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jesus shows in this episode\u00a0that he possesses the powers that had once been ascribed to the ancient storm god Ba\u2018al, who had been such a temptation to the ancient Israelites but was now defunct and essentially forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lake Tiberias, Kinnereth, or the Sea of Galilee is prone to storms, for reasons explained <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christiananswers.net\/q-eden\/ednk-seaofgalilee.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>. \u00a0They may not be quite as spectacular, typically, as that depicted by Rembrandt in the painting above. \u00a0But then, the boat in which Jesus and his disciples were traveling was almost certainly a more humble thing, too. \u00a0And, to make things worse, the disciples may have been unable to swim. \u00a0(Surprisingly, many pre-modern sailors couldn\u2019t.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19700\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19700\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/04\/800px-Ginosar_BW_7.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19700\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/04\/800px-Ginosar_BW_7.jpg\" alt='The so-called \"Jesus boat\"' width=\"597\" height=\"400\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19700\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some years ago, the remains of a fishing boat from roughly the time of Jesus were found when the level of the lake had dropped during a season of drought. These remains are now on display in the Yigal Alon Museum at Kibbutz Ginosar, on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee.<br>(Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GloffUv0xKk\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IEH2iE1CiWY\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a> are amateur videos (each roughly a minute long) of stormy days on the Sea of Galilee, which is normally quite a placid lake.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19710\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19710\" style=\"width: 409px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/04\/409px-Thedecapolis.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19710\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/04\/409px-Thedecapolis.png\" alt=\"Decapolis map\" width=\"409\" height=\"600\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19710\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Wikimedia Commons public domain map of the Decapolis, showing both Gadara and Gerasa (which is probably Jerash, in today\u2019s Jordan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/matt\/8.28-34\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew 8:28-34<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/mark\/5.1-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark 5:1-20<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/luke\/8.26-39\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Luke 8:26-39<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Did this incident, reported in all three of the synoptic gospels, occur in Gadara, Gerasa, or Gergesa? \u00a0Were there two demoniacs, or was there only one?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The various accounts of Joseph Smith\u2019s First Vision typically speak of a visitation of the Father and the Son, but one speaks only of an appearance of the Son (which, it\u2019s important to note, isn\u2019t saying that the Father <em>didn\u2019t<\/em> appear, or that the Son was the <em>only<\/em> person to appear).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many of those who attack Joseph\u2019s accounts as contradictory on this point \u2014 which, logically speaking, they\u2019re not \u2014 are fundamentalist Protestants, who remain serenely unbothered by the variation in the number of angels at Christ\u2019s tomb, and by Gadara\/Gergesa\/Gerasa, and by the number of the (Gerasene) demoniacs.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On a recent attempt to harmonize the various accounts of the First Vision, by the way, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mormoninterpreter.com\/rediscovering-the-first-vision\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, the area east of the Sea of Galilee and the Jordan was far more Greco-Roman in the time of Christ than it was Jewish. \u00a0Hence the herd of (Gadarene) swine.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Luke 8:19-21 Compare Matthew 12:46-50;Mark 3:31-35;
