We were out to dinner with a number of valued friends and colleagues tonight \u2014 fifteen, in total \u2014 all gathered for a tardy celebration of the birthday of Professor Louis C. Midgley, a favorite of those of us who know him. \u00a0Good food and good camaraderie. \u00a0Some of the best things in life.<\/p>\n

Afterwards, visiting with a friend who could not participate tonight, we heard some truly remarkable \u2014 even miraculous \u2014 autobiographical stories. \u00a0I hope that they\u2019ve been written down!<\/p>\n

CNN: \u00a0\u201cWhy the \u2018Mormon\u2019 church changed its name. (It\u2019s about revelation, not rebranding.)\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Some critics are mocking President Nelson because his strong request that we use and emphasize the divinely-revealed name of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> hasn\u2019t been received as a God-given diktat<\/em> by the mainstream media.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a fairly silly thing to mock. \u00a0I\u2019m sure that President Nelson, a high intelligent and sophisticated man who\u2019s been around the block a few times in his nearly ninety-four years, was under no illusion that the press and the broadcast media would kneel to kiss his ring. \u00a0And, anyway, the news establishment isn\u2019t exactly known for its habit of genuflecting before \u00a0conservative religious groups.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But he is right, in my judgment, to try to move the Church itself toward such an emphasis on the name of Jesus Christ \u2014 and to hope that that emphasis will have at least some slight effect on our coverage in the media. \u00a0And, in fact, there does already seem to have been some shifting:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Why does this matter? \u00a0Why is it important?<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s important because the terms Mormon<\/em> and Mormonism<\/em>, venerable as they have become, tend to obscure the fact that our allegiance is to the Lord Jesus Christ \u2014 and thus to permit misunderstandings. \u00a0By stressing that we are the Church of Jesus Christ (of Latter-day Saints), we make such misunderstandings less likely to arise and more difficult to sustain. \u00a0We shouldn\u2019t forget that Mormon<\/em> and Mormonite<\/em> began as nicknames, given to us by unsympathetic and often hostile outsiders.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Granted, there are difficulties in making this change. \u00a0I\u2019ve not yet settled, myself, on a fully satisfying substitute for Mormonism<\/em>. \u00a0And life-long habits are hard to break. \u00a0But this is a worthwhile effort \u2014 and it will remain so even if, as is likely, others commonly continue to refer to us as \u201cMormons.\u201d<\/p>\n
