10:1, 7-11, 14<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is a fundamental scripture for Latter-day Saints, and represents, really, the beginning of the Christian Church in the Old World.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still today, the apostleship is fundamental to the organization and authority of the Church. \u00a0Not merely in the historical sense common to Christian churches generally, but as a living reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The number twelve is probably connected with the twelve tribes of Israel, just as the number seventy, soon to be used for another group of disciples, is connected with the traditional seventy nations of the world that appears in the Old Testament.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Certain numbers recur. \u00a0One, of course. \u00a0Three, as in the Trinity itself, along with the First Presidency, stake presidencies, and virtually all other presidencies and group leaderships in the Church, not to mention bishoprics. \u00a0Seven, as in the days of creation and the leadership of the Seventy. \u00a0Twelve. \u00a0Sometimes forty (days and nights, as in the Flood and Jesus\u2019 post-baptismal fast). \u00a0Seventy. \u00a0It\u2019s not clear why these numbers recur, but they do.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19777\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19777\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/04\/640px-Formella_06_donatello_banchetto_di_erode_1427_01.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19777\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/04\/640px-Formella_06_donatello_banchetto_di_erode_1427_01.jpg\" alt=\"Donatello at the Siena Baptistry\" width=\"597\" height=\"590\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Herod\u2019s Feast, by Donatello, from the baptistry at Siena \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/matt\/14.1-2?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew 14:1-2<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/mark\/6.14-16?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark 6:14-16<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/luke\/9.7-9?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Luke 9:7-9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Herod\u2019s notion that Jesus was actually John the Baptist, risen from the dead, suggests that he\u00a0hadn\u2019t been following things very closely, since Jesus and John were rough contemporaries and had had interactions (notably John\u2019s baptism of Jesus) publicly demonstrating that they were two distinct individuals.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19782\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19782\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/04\/320px-Regnault_Henri_Salom%C3%A9.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19782\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/04\/320px-Regnault_Henri_Salom%C3%A9.jpg\" alt=\"Henri Regnault's &quot;Salom\u00e9&quot;\" width=\"320\" height=\"512\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19782\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cSalom\u00e9,\u201d by Henri Regnault (1870)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/matt\/14.3-12\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Matthew 14:3-12<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/mark\/6.17-29\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark 6:17-29<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Compare Luke 3:19-20<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are certain Protestant evangelists who preach what\u2019s known as the \u201cprosperity gospel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there are more than a few Latter-day Saints who also seem to imagine that righteous living and devotion to God is guaranteed to grant disciples\u00a0glowing good health and make them wealthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shouldn\u2019t the story of John the Baptist be enough, in and of itself, to demonstrate the falsehood of such notions? \u00a0(I won\u2019t mention Joseph Smith here. But you get the idea.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>John was righteous, faithful, a prophet, the chosen forerunner of the Savior himself. \u00a0\u201c<span style=\"color: #001320;\">Verily I say unto you,\u201d remarked Jesus, \u201cAmong them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist\u201d (Matthew 11:11).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet there is, to put it mildly, no evidence that John grew rich. \u00a0And he ended his days in a miserable Herodian jail cell, where he was beheaded at the whim of a spoiled princess and her amoral mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, good living \u2014 marital fidelity, kindness, thoughtfulness, sobriety, honesty, diligence, pleasantness, and so forth \u2014 will tend to benefit the person who possesses such attributes. \u00a0But there is no guarantee in this life that we\u2019ll avoid illness, loss, sorrow, betrayal, slander, and injustice, let alone death. \u00a0Dealing with such things is, in a certain sense, what life is <em>about<\/em>. \u00a0Which is, of course, much easier to <em>say<\/em> than to <em>do<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Mark 6:6-13 Luke 9:1-6 Compare Matthew 9:35;
