a boat on the lake, couldn\u2019t swim.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The BYU students who study in Israel have long had a traditional song that they sing when they\u2019re in the Galilee: \u00a0\u201cI swam today where Jesus walked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s striking that even Jesus sometimes needed a bit of time alone, to pray and to recharge his batteries. \u00a0If he did, we probably do, as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19836\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/john\/6.22-25\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John 6:22-25<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(Another of the Sea of Galilee\u2019s several names is \u201cGennesaret.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>People gathered about Jesus in crowds, seeking healing for themselves and their loved ones from tangible, physical ailments.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nothing wrong with that.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Particularly in an era and in a distant rural place where medicine as we know it, even of the most rudimentary\u00a0kind, simply didn\u2019t exist. \u00a0You could die, or be permanently incapacitated, from minor\u00a0things that we can cure today with a pill or two.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But <em>we<\/em> should be crowding around Jesus <em>today<\/em>, craving relief from our <em>spiritual<\/em> illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Too few of us do. \u00a0And too few of us do so consistently.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20086\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20086\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/john\/6.26-59?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John 6:26-59<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jesus\u2019 famous \u201cBread of Life\u201d sermon, given in the synagogue at Capernaum, is recorded only in the gospel of John.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And \u2014 I hope I\u2019ll be forgiven for saying this \u2014 its setting features elements of humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In John 6:26, Jesus tells the multitude who\u2019re following him that their motives are somewhat low; they don\u2019t care about spiritual things so much as they care about food. \u00a0(He had just miraculously fed them.) \u00a0\u201cDo not labor for the food which perishes,\u201d he admonishes them, \u201cbut for the food which endures to eternal life\u201d (6:27).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Well, they respond in 6:30-31, okay. \u00a0But we need a sign from you so that we can have confidence in your claims. \u00a0How about . . . um, giving us <em>food?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On a more serious and profound note, I\u2019m struck by 6:33, where the Savior explains that \u201cthe bread of God is that which comes down from heaven, and gives life to the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We should think, in this context, of the opening lines of the gospel of John as a whole (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/john\/1.1-14?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">1:1-14<\/a>). \u00a0And we should think of God, and of his agent in creation, the Son, as the authors of order and life in our universe.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Powerful
