The scribes and Pharisees accuse Jesus of violating \u201cthe tradition of the elders,\u201d but he one-ups them by pointing out that they and their\u00a0tradition actually violate \u201cthe commandment of God.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the Marcan account, the Savior cites Isaiah to describe them:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people\u00a0honoureth\u00a0me with\u00a0their<\/span>\u00a0lips, but their heart is far from me. \u00a0Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span>doctrines the commandments of men. \u00a0For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the\u00a0tradition\u00a0of men,\u00a0as<\/i><\/span>\u00a0the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. \u00a0And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It won\u2019t be the last time that he\u2019ll cite that passage from Isaiah.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the spring of 1820, he\u2019ll quote it again, this time to the young farm boy Joseph Smith:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all\u00a0wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those\u00a0professors\u00a0were all\u00a0corrupt; that: \u201cthey draw near\u00a0to me with their lips, but their\u00a0hearts\u00a0are far from me, they teach for doctrines the\u00a0commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power\u00a0thereof.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the first century, the Lord was\u00a0reminding the scribes and Pharisees that the ethical and spiritual\u00a0commandments are far more fundamental and important than are outward ritual prescriptions. \u00a0In the nineteenth century, he was denouncing apostate deviations from revealed doctrine and principles. \u00a0Once again, human wisdom had been substituted for divine revelation. \u00a0It\u2019s a pattern.<\/p>\n

Tyre and Sidon, major coastal cities still today in the nation of Lebanon, were plainly outside of Jewish territory, and the Syrophoenician or Canaanite woman is obviously a gentile. \u00a0That\u2019s the necessary background here.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jesus tests her. \u00a0And she passes with flying colors.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This foreshadows the eventual taking of the gospel to the gentile nations. \u00a0But, despite this exception, the time was not yet.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, the King James\u00a0then came she and worshipped him<\/em> of Matthew 15:25 would be better rendered in today\u2019s English as but she came and knelt before him<\/em> [\u1f21 \u03b4\u1f72 \u1f10\u03bb\u03b8\u03bf\u1fe6\u03c3\u03b1\u00a0<\/span>\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c3\u03b5\u03ba\u03cd\u03bd\u03b5\u03b9 \u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u1ff7].<\/span><\/p>\n
