Mormonism<\/a> has long been a significant presence in Polynesia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019m delighted at the announcement of eight new temples to be built:<\/p>\n

Pago Pago, American Samoa<\/span>
\nOkinawa City, Okinawa<\/span>
\nNeiafu, Tonga<\/span>
\nTooele Valley, Utah<\/span>
\nMoses Lake, Washington<\/span>
\nSan Pedro Sula, Honduras<\/span>
\nAntofagasta, Chile<\/span>
\nBudapest, Hungary<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
You can be certain, I think, that several of them, if not most of them, will be relatively small. \u00a0But that\u2019s fine. \u00a0I\u2019ve been told that President Nelson is committed to making temples more accessible to members of the Church, and especially to those of limited financial means.<\/p>\n

I was pleased to hear two of my favorite scriptural passages cited at this weekend\u2019s General Conference:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and\u00a0happy\u00a0state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are\u00a0blessed\u00a0in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out\u00a0faithful\u00a0to the end they are received into\u00a0heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for the Lord God hath spoken it. \u00a0(Mosiah 2:41)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
From that\u00a0time<\/span>\u00a0many of his\u00a0disciples\u00a0went back, and\u00a0walked\u00a0no more with him. \u00a0Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the\u00a0words\u00a0of eternal life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>And\u00a0we\u00a0believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the\u00a0Son\u00a0of the living God. \u00a0(John 6:66-69)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve seen a fair amount of harsh commentary about the leaders of the Church over the past few days, on many subjects. One rather curious topic that I saw on a quite toxic site concerned the luxurious feasts on which the First Presidency and the Twelve allegedly glut themselves between Conference sessions, while millions go hungry and while many Conference attendees subsist on sack lunches.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I can\u2019t really speak directly to the topic of apostle-only Conference banquets, having never been a member of the First Presidency or the Twelve. \u00a0(I suspect that at least some of those commenting may themselves<\/em> not have been members of those quorums, either.) \u00a0But I remember attending General Conference several years as a guest of the family of Elder L. Tom Perry, a member of the Twelve. \u00a0After the session was over, we had lunch at his fairly modest condominium, nearby. \u00a0Elder Perry\u2019s wife was there, but he himself couldn\u2019t make it because he was busy setting apart new Area Authority Seventies, of whom a large number had just been called (as a great number were called this weekend, too). \u00a0There being only two hours between the morning and the afternoon sessions, I doubt that Elder Perry had very much time left over to him for extravagant feasting.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
These evil men, claimed one commenter on the lavish between-session feasting of the Brethren, are contributing massively to suffering and death.<\/p>\n

Sometimes, when reading such absurdities, I wonder whether I\u2019ve wandered into an episode of the Twilight Zone<\/em>.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
