12:1-3<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mary and Martha, and their brother Lazarus, were friends of Jesus. \u00a0He apparently often stayed with them when he came to Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They lived in Bethany (Aramaic\u00a0<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u05d1\u05d9\u05ea \u05e2\u05e0\u05d9\u05d0,\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"color: #252525;\">Beth Anya<\/i>; Greek<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"el\" style=\"color: #252525;\" xml:lang=\"el\">\u0392\u03b7\u03b8\u03b1\u03bd\u03af\u03b1<\/span><span style=\"color: #252525;\">)<\/span>, the traditional site of which is still known today, in Arabic, as <em>al-Eizariyya<\/em><span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0(\u0627\u0644\u0639\u064a\u0632\u0631\u064a\u0629), a name that\u00a0derives from <em>Lazarus<\/em>. \u00a0It\u2019s a West Bank town located just over the Mount of Olives, on its southeast slope, from Jerusalem. \u00a0The Garden of Gethsemane was located at the Jerusalem-end of a path that connected Bethany with Jerusalem over a saddle on the Mount of Olives. \u00a0Jesus would have passed it often, as we walked between their place and the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I presume that he stayed with them for economic or financial reasons, especially at festival times when the inns were full and the prices high, just as people coming to Salt Lake City for General Conference will often stay with friends or relatives in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21655\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21655\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/06\/800px-Jan_Brueghel_the_Elder_-_The_Sermon_on_the_Mount_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-21655\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/06\/800px-Jan_Brueghel_the_Elder_-_The_Sermon_on_the_Mount_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg\" alt=\"Brueghel's Sermon on Mount\" width=\"597\" height=\"438\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cThe Sermon on the Mount\u201d\u00a0(Jan Brueghel the Elder, 1597; Welch\u2019s 1998\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Illuminating-Sermon-Temple-Mount-Approach\/dp\/0934893373\/ref=la_B000APESFS_1_4?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1435343036&amp;sr=1-4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Illuminating the Sermon at the Temple and Sermon on the Mount: An Approach to 3 Nephi 11-18 and Matthew 5-7<\/em><\/a>, reissued in 2010 as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sermon-Temple-Mount-Latter-Day-Approach\/dp\/0875793010\/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;sr=1-6&amp;qid=1435343406\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Sermon at the Temple and the Sermon on the Mount: A Latter-day Saint Approach<\/em><\/a>, which is a substantial revision of his 1990 <em>The Sermon at the Temple and the Sermon on the Mount.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the book was published by FARMS (now the Maxwell Institute), back in the dark era\u00a0before real scholarship came to that organization, when vicious <em>ad hominems<\/em> and pseudo-scholarship were the order of the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, incidentally, Professor Welch \u2014 my incredibly prolific and polymathic friend \u2014 published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sermon-Temple-Society-Testament-Monographs\/dp\/0754651649\/ref=la_B000APESFS_1_10?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1435343566&amp;sr=1-10&amp;refinements=p_82%3AB000APESFS\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Sermon on the Mount in the Light of the Temple<\/em> <\/a>with Ashgate, in the United Kingdom. \u00a0This was a revision of his work for a general non-LDS audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Luke 10:25-28 Compare Matthew 22:34-40;
