Luke 12:13-21<\/a><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
A very similar sentiment (against boasting or too-confident anticipation of tomorrow) is expressed at James 4:13-16:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Now listen,\u00a0you who say, \u201cToday or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.<\/span>\u00a0Instead, you ought to say, \u201cIf it is the Lord\u2019s will,\u00a0we will live and do this or that.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. \u00a0(New International Version<\/em>)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
This is, if you\u2019ll pardon my pointing it out, a very Islamic sentiment. \u00a0One of the most commonly heard phrases in the Arabic or Islamic world is\u00a0\u0625\u0646 \u0634\u0627\u0621 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 (in sha\u2018a Allah<\/em>; \u201cIf God wills\u201d). \u00a0It\u2019s said whenever a promise or a commitment is made, or a hope expressed. \u00a0And Muslims mean it. \u00a0To not say it is to come across as arrogant, as, in a sense, rejecting the sovereignty and providence of God. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen does God laugh? \u00a0When humans make plans.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cMan proposes; God disposes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
We shouldn\u2019t make the error of falling into a fatalistic passivity, but there is much wisdom in such statements. \u00a0We have a great deal of control, but not ultimately. \u00a0In the end, time and chance happen to us all. \u00a0We are not the masters of our fates. \u00a0We are not the captains of our souls.<\/p>\n
