(National Science Foundation and Event Horizon Telescope public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are still celebrating the black hole image that was released a few days ago, and pondering its significance:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/startswithabang\/2019\/04\/11\/10-deep-lessons-from-our-first-image-of-a-black-holes-event-horizon\/#5822524955e6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201c10 Deep Lessons From Our First Image Of A Black Hole\u2019s Event Horizon\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/event-horizon-telescope-scientist-first-black-hole-image?tgt=nr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cMeet one of the first scientists to see the historic black hole image: Making a portrait of a black hole led to sleepless nights and one big thrill\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/blog\/context\/black-hole-image-validates-imagining-unimaginable?tgt=nr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cBlack hole image validates imagining the unimaginable: Long dreamed of yet unseen, invisible stars intrigued scientists and the public as well\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, one of the scientists mentioned in the third of the three articles above is the great John Archibald Wheeler (1911-2008), who popularized the phrase <em>black hole<\/em>. \u00a0In that context, you might be interested to read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairmormon.org\/testimonies\/scholars\/b-kent-harrison\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the testimony of B. Kent Harrison<\/a> on the \u201cMormon Scholars Testify\u201d website. \u00a0(Yes, I\u2019ll eventually get around to changing the name of that site. \u00a0Don\u2019t worry!) \u00a0Professor Harrison studied with Professor Wheeler at Princeton, and, as his biography at \u201cMormon Scholars Testify\u201d indicates, co-authored a book with him: \u00a0<em>Gravitation Theory and Gravitational Collapse<\/em>\u00a0(Chicago, 1965).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The article also mentions the German mathematical physicist and astronomer\u00a0Karl Schwarzschild\u00a0(1873-1916), who, in 1915, arrived at the\u00a0first\u00a0exact solution\u00a0to the\u00a0field equations\u00a0of in Albert Einstein\u2019s theory of\u00a0general relativity, which was itself introduced that year. \u00a0Effectively, Schwarzschild deduced the likely existence of black holes. \u00a0He accomplished this while he was serving in the German army during the First World War. \u00a0Unfortunately, he died the following year from an autoimmune disease that he had contracted on the Russian front, at the age of just 42.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Karl Schwarzschild represents yet another tragic example of human potential remaining unfulfilled in this life \u2014 and yet another reason to hope that there is a life beyond this one. \u00a0(See also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/765590762\/Beethoven-is-a-study-in-hope-healing.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cBeethoven is a study in hope, healing.\u201d<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Was Mars once partially covered by a sea of liquid water, or was it not?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearscience.com\/quick_and_clear_science\/2019\/04\/08\/the_paradoxes_of_a_martian_ocean.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe Paradoxes of a Martian Ocean\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/climate-change-arctic-browning?tgt=nr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cClimate change made the Arctic greener.
