The simple fact is that material possessions wear out and become obsolete. \u00a0Houses burn down. \u00a0Things\u00a0get\u00a0broken, are stolen and lost. \u00a0The pleasures associated with them fade. \u00a0They become \u201cold hat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Seeking lasting satisfaction in a new car or a new HD-TV or a new house or a new dress or a new cell phone is a quest that\u2019s bound to fail.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

We all know this. \u00a0But we forget it. \u00a0Constantly.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll be happy when I get that promotion. \u00a0When I own that car. \u00a0When I move into that house. \u00a0When I have that boat.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

We\u2019re slow learners.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

To paraphrase a common saying, \u201cWhen the time for action arrives, the time for preparation is past,\u201d or \u201cWhen the time of judgment arrives, the time for preparation is past.\u201d<\/p>\n

We lull ourselves into a state of comfortable complacency, assuming that everything will continue as it has long gone, that we have lots of time, that tomorrow will be just like today.<\/p>\n

And then we die. \u00a0Or become ill. \u00a0Or have a terrible accident. \u00a0Or experience a natural catastrophe. \u00a0Or suddenly lose a loved one. \u00a0Or are fired.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re seldom fully ready, and, all too often, we\u2019re utterly unprepared.<\/p>\n

And, each time, we vow that it won\u2019t happen again.<\/p>\n

Having faith in Christ, living the Gospel, and enjoying fellowship\u00a0with the Saints is, on the whole, a prescription for peace and happiness.<\/p>\n

But it can sometimes be distinctly otherwise.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

There are people out there who really dislike our faith and our church, and they\u2019re not always nice about it.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Gospel brings unity, but, in this life, it also creates disharmony.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In my particular case, being a public advocate and defender of the claims of the Restoration has drawn a great deal of hostile fire, derision, misrepresentation, and contempt. \u00a0I don\u2019t take any pleasure in this. \u00a0I don\u2019t enjoy conflict. \u00a0I have no interest in martyrdom or persecution. \u00a0I\u2019m a pretty cheerful, mild-mannered guy. \u00a0I would much rather have peace and quiet. \u00a0But, if this is the way it\u2019s got to be, this is the way it\u2019s got to be. \u00a0It\u2019s not as if we weren\u2019t warned.<\/p>\n
