class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our annual student research publication<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m happy to pass this note on from <a href=\"https:\/\/fhssfaculty.byu.edu\/FacultyPage\/rqm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Quinn Mecham<\/a>, the Coordinator for Middle East Studies \u2014 which shouldn\u2019t be confused with the parallel program in Ancient Near Eastern Studies \u2014 at Brigham Young University:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #003300;\">The 2019 issue of BYU MESA\u2019s student research publication\u00a0<i>Al-Buhuuth<\/i>, has just been published on-line. \u00a0 Thanks to Nick Hainsworth of the MESAS leadership committee and to Joshua Gubler of the Political Science department for leading out on the editorial work, as well as to the whole editorial committee. \u00a0Thanks also to all of the students who submitted their original research for consideration in this year\u2019s publication!<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><i>Al-Buhuuth\u00a0<\/i>(Studies)<i>\u00a0<\/i>is the official on-line student publication of the Middle East Studies program at Brigham Young University. \u00a0It publishes original student research and research essays on Middle Eastern topics once a year, highlighting the best student ideas and research findings from the previous year. \u00a0Research is peer-reviewed by students and by faculty. \u00a0Students or recent graduates can submit original research for consideration in January of each year for publication in April. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><em>Al-Buhuuth<\/em> can be accessed at the following address:\u00a0<a contributions to\u00a0<i>Al-Buhuuth<\/i>. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m happy to share Dr. \u00a0Mecham\u2019s note \u2014 something that I hope he won\u2019t mind \u2014 because I want people out there (especially the tithepayers who support the University) to be aware of how well BYU\u2019s Middle East Studies program is doing these days.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another related item:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A couple of days ago, a colleague passed on a compliment paid to BYU by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbk.ac.uk\/linguistics\/our-staff\/academic-staff\/jean-marc-dewaele\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Professor Jean-Marc Dewaele<\/a>\u00a0of the University of London at a conference in Lodz, Poland, on\u00a0\u201cEducation from the Perspective of Positive Psychology.\u201d \u00a0Dr. Dewaele is an international superstar in the field of language-learning and language pedagogy, and, I\u2019m told, the reigning expert on the connection between emotions and second-language acquisition.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0his plenary address at the conference in Poland, Professor Dewaele evidently commented\u00a0on the research conducted at BYU on various languages and specifically on the BYU Arabic program. \u00a0\u201cBYU,\u201d he wrote thereafter to one of our linguistics professors who was there in attendance, \u201cis a shining example about how F[oreign] L[anguage] learning should be present in university education!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m proud to be associated with the people who have created such a fine program here. \u00a0I\u2019ve been peripherally involved, providing a bit of secondary support around the edges, but what they\u2019ve built is absolutely world-class. \u00a0Moreover, I\u2019m confident that the future of BYU\u2019s Arabic program is very
