This passage may not seem entirely clear. \u00a0But one thing is<\/em> clear: \u00a0Jesus is not denouncing the Law of Moses. \u00a0Forms of Protestantism that denigrate the Law do so in opposition to the Savior himself, in whose name they sometimes claim to do it.<\/p>\n

This is an extraordinarily tough standard. \u00a0There\u2019s much to be said about it, and a number of questions to be asked and, perhaps, answered.<\/p>\n

But, right now, I don\u2019t have the time to do this verse justice.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

So \u2014 accuse me of cowardice if you like! \u2014 I\u2019m not going to try.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Does it leave any possible room for doubt, though, as to how the Lord feels about divorce?<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019I hate divorce,\u2019 says the\u00a0<\/span>Lord<\/span>\u00a0God of Israel, \u2018and the one who is guilty of violence,\u2019 says the\u00a0<\/span>Lord\u00a0<\/span>who rules over all. \u2018Pay attention to your conscience, and do not be unfaithful.\u2019\u201d \u00a0(Malachi 2:16)<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the great New Testament parables.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll concentrate on just a single aspect of it:<\/p>\n

It\u2019s amazing to me to watch as\u00a0some people casually dismiss evidence supportive of the claims of the Restoration that I see as extraordinarily powerful (e.g., the Witnesses to the Book of Mormon).<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t help but think, in such cases, of the reaction of Laman and Lemuel to their rebuke by an angel, as recounted in 1 Nephi 3<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I would find that story implausible, except that I actually know some people who\u2019ve turned their backs on the Gospel after having (by their own accounts) been granted absolutely remarkable Gospel-specific manifestations.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It does happen.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

So the notion that certain folks wouldn\u2019t \u201cbe\u00a0persuaded, though one rose from the dead,\u201d though it\u2019s very surprising at first glance, is quite believable to me. \u00a0And some people, I think, are determined<\/em> not to believe. \u00a0They cannot ultimately be persuaded against their will.<\/p>\n

A substantial portion of the trial of this life is dealing with the boorishness, betrayals, indifference, selfishness, dishonesty, and occasional hatred and violence of others.<\/p>\n

Such things are an essential part of the test. \u00a0But those who are guilty of them\u00a0will receive no divine reward for them.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And, of course, that includes all<\/em> of\u00a0us.<\/p>\n
