Faith [is] the first principle in revealed religion, and the foundation of all righteousness. 9. Faith is the assurance which men have of the existence of things which they have not seen and . . . the principle of action in all intelligent beings. 12. As faith is the moving cause of all action in temporal concerns, so it is in spiritual. 13. But faith is not only the principle of action, but it is also the principle of power in all intelligent beings, whether in heaven or on earth. 15. The principle of power which existed in the bosom of God, by which he framed the worlds, was faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25357\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25357\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/08\/Byzantine_agriculture.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-25357\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/08\/Byzantine_agriculture.jpg\" alt=\"Workers in the vineyard\" width=\"597\" height=\"450\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Byzantine illustration of agricultural workers in the New Testament<br>(Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/luke\/17.7-10?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Luke 17:7-10<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is an analogous passage in the Book of Mormon, in King Benjamin\u2019s marvelous speech. \u00a0And, to me anyway, there\u2019s a striking anecdote\u00a0(from outside the Book of Mormon) in which it plays a role:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Truman Madsen once told me of a year-end Christmas party for the missionaries who served on Temple Square. \u00a0This was a long time ago, when those missionaries were older local men rather than today\u2019s young full-time sister missionaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>President Joseph Fielding Smith, then of the Council of the Twelve, was to be the concluding speaker at the dinner party. \u00a0He had been allotted a fair amount of time for his remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, at least to President Smith\u2019s taste, the earlier speeches and testimonials of the evening took a bit too much of a self-congratulatory turn, about all of the great things that the Temple Square missionaries had accomplished on behalf of the Lord\u2019s Church during the preceding twelve months.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, when his turn came to speak, he stood up, opened his scriptures, and read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/mosiah\/2.20-21?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mosiah 2:20-21<\/a> to them. \u00a0\u201cIn the name of Jesus Christ, Amen,\u201d he said when he\u2019d finished reading, and he sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I may be mistaken, but I seem to recall that Truman was there in the audience, and that, at least in retrospect, he thought President Smith\u2019s non-speech rather well-aimed. \u00a0He told me that you could have heard the proverbial pin drop, afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You might think the rebuke just a tad sharp, and perhaps it was. \u00a0But the Lord\u2019s statement in Luke 17:7-10, the passage under consideration here, is pretty tough, too. \u00a0And it\u2019s certainly thought-provoking.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Luke 17:3-4 Compare Matthew 18:15, 21-22 \u00a0 Please note the requirement in this passage, absent from Matthew 18:21-22, that the sinner acknowledge his sin and repent. \u00a0 \u00a0 Luke 17:5-6 Compare 17:19-21; 21:21; Mark 9:28-29; 11:22-23 \u00a0 I\u2019m reminded, in this context of the Lectures on Faith: \u00a0 Lecture One\u00a01.
