charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26185\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26185\" style=\"width: 283px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/09\/Jesus_uppv%C3%A4cker_Lazarus_m%C3%A5lning_av_Karl_Isakson.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26185\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/09\/Jesus_uppv%C3%A4cker_Lazarus_m%C3%A5lning_av_Karl_Isakson.jpg\" alt=\"Isakson does Jesus and Lazarus\" width=\"283\" height=\"420\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cJesus uppv\u00e4cker Lazarus\u201d<br>(Jesus awakens Lazarus)<br>Karl Isakson (1921)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/john\/10.40-42?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John 10:40-42<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/john\/11.1-44?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John 11:1-44<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bethany is just over the Mount of Olives from Jerusalem. \u00a0Jesus, who probably had little money, seems to have stayed there with his friends Mary, Martha, and Lazarus (= <em>El\u2018azar<\/em> or <em>Eleazar<\/em>) when he was in Judea. \u00a0Then he would walk over the hill to Jerusalem, along a road that still runs directly past (or through) the Garden of Gethsemane.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When Jesus heard the news that Lazarus was very ill, he deliberately took his time before acting on the sisters\u2019 implicit request that he come. \u00a0This was probably intended to allow him to demonstrate his power over death. \u00a0In that regard, Christ\u2019s raising of Lazarus represents the climax of John\u2019s series of miracles, and it foreshadows his own resurrection. \u00a0It was also far too public and spectacular a demonstration of his power to be ignored by the authorities, who had been watching him with concern and who now felt compelled to act.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The apostle Thomas is often remembered for his proverbial doubts. \u00a0But he should also be recalled for his courage: \u00a0First the disciples try to persuade Jesus not to return to Judea because it\u2019s too dangerous. \u00a0When it\u2019s clear, though, that he\u2019s going to go nonetheless, Thomas exhorts them: \u00a0\u201cLet us go also, that we may die with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The faith that both Mary and Martha had in Jesus is shown by the declaration, made by each, that, had Jesus only been there in time, Lazarus wouldn\u2019t have died.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The shortest verse in all of scripture is John 11:35: \u00a0\u201cJesus wept.\u201d \u00a0Yet it\u2019s also among the most profoundly significant. \u00a0I wrote a column on divine emotion back at the beginning of 2014:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/865595143\/The-most-moved-mover.html?pg=all\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/865595143\/The-most-moved-mover.html?pg=all<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I still regard this as a vitally important theological point.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And if, as passages such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/col\/1.15?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Colossians 1:15<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/nt\/heb\/1.1-3?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hebrews 1:3<\/a> suggest, Christ is a perfect representation of the Father, the emotion on display in John 11 is profoundly significant.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There can scarcely be a more comforting verse in the canon than John 11:25:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #6b2705;\"><strong>\u201cI am the resurrection and the life; Mark 11:18; 14:1-2; Luke 19:47-48; 22:1-2<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the miracle of the raising of Lazarus \u2014 far too spectacular and far too public to be ignored \u2014 that seems to have finally impelled the Jewish leadership in Jerusalem to seek Jesus\u2019 life. \u00a0That miracle was simply too big, too obvious, too attractive, for them to let it pass without response.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For some background on Caiaphas\u2019s comment that \u201cit is expedient that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation should not perish,\u201d\u00a0see the brief discussion by John W.
