John 12:9-11<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Clearly, according to the gospel of John, the raising of Lazarus was the immediate catalyst for the arrest and execution of Jesus. \u00a0The miracle was simply too obvious and far too spectacular to ignore. \u00a0The Jewish leadership may not have believed it to have been a genuine<\/em> miracle \u2014 they most likely didn\u2019t<\/em> \u2014 but they knew that a very great number of their fellow Jews did. \u00a0<\/em>It was creating a very volatile situation.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Increased visibility brings increased hostility.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Latter-day Saints should know that, understand it, expect it, and be prepared to cope with it.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It won\u2019t always come in the form of murder plots and violent persecution, either. \u00a0In fact, it rarely will. \u00a0Almost never. \u00a0Usually, it will come in more gentle ways. Verbal slights or attacks, social insults or exclusions, mockery, derision, media misrepresentation. \u00a0Public and private criticisms, some of them based on legitimate questions or concerns, some grossly unjust and even dishonest. \u00a0Often subtle. \u00a0Sometimes almost unnoticed.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The response must not be paranoia or a persecution complex.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

We must sometimes correct egregious falsehoods; they cannot be permitted to travel around the world uncontradicted. \u00a0But, mostly, we must concentrate on living and acting and speaking as befits Latter-day Saints. \u00a0\u201cBe not overcome of evil,\u201d wrote the apostle Paul (Romans 12:21), \u201cbut overcome evil with good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. \u00a0<\/span>The same was in the beginning with God. \u00a0All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. \u00a0In him was life; and the life was the light of men. \u00a0And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.<\/strong> \u00a0(John 1:1-5)<\/span><\/p>\n

All four New Testament gospels \u2014 the three synoptics and John \u2014 mention the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. \u00a0It\u2019s commemorated throughout much of Christendom on \u201cPalm Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Two observations:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

1) \u00a0This event essentially forced the confrontation that would soon follow between Jesus and the rulers of Jerusalem. \u00a0They saw him as a menace to the fragile status quo.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

2) \u00a0Contrast the acclaim of the mob with the\u00a0trial and public abandonment (\u201cCrucify him!\u201d) that would occur within the week<\/em>. \u00a0Easter Sunday is only a seven days away; the Passover, the arrest, the trial, and the crucifixion will intervene. \u00a0Plainly, popular acclaim is fickle.<\/p>\n
