Pete Buttigieg and Utah show the way.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>***<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just minutes ago \u2014 it being Tuesday, 7 May 2019 \u2014 we heard the siren marking the beginning of <em>Yom HaZikaron<\/em>, the Israeli Memorial Day. \u00a0(It shouldn\u2019t be confused with Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah, which occurred on 1-2 May 2019.) \u00a0Lasting sixty seconds and heard throughout Israel, the siren actually sounds on what, to non-Jews, would seem the evening that precedes the actual\u00a0<em>Yom HaZikaron<\/em>. \u00a0However, as the opening chapters of Genesis indicate, \u201cdays\u201d begin for Jews with the sunsets of the evenings before them.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Yom HaZikaron<\/em>\u00a0is the national day of remembrance that is observed in Israel for all Israeli military personnel who were killed in the fighting that led to the establishment of the State of Israel and also for all those who have been killed since then while on active duty in Israel\u2019s armed forces. \u00a0That figure is currently around 25,000 \u2014 which, for a country the (small) size of Israel, represents a considerable loss. \u00a0Of late, all Israeli civilian victims of terrorism have been commemorated during the holiday, as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the siren wails, Israelis stop whatever they\u2019re doing, including driving cars. \u00a0They pull over. \u00a0They stand silently, showing their respect for those who have fallen.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By Israeli law, all places of entertainment are closed on the eve of <em>Yom HaZikaron<\/em> \u2014 which means that they\u2019re closed as I\u2019m writing this \u2014 and all broadcasting services observe the day with appropriate programming.<sup id=\"cite_ref-EJ846_7-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0 In other words, regular television programs are suspended, and the names and ranks of every soldier who has died for Israel are featured on television over a 24-hour period. \u00a0(We were unable to visit the Israel Museum this afternoon because of the impending\u00a0<em>Yom HaZikaron.)<\/em><sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I believe that the dead <em>ought<\/em> to be remembered. \u00a0Treasured, valued, and loved, even. \u00a0One of the ways in which Latter-day Saints remember the dead is with the work we do in our temples. \u00a0(By which I do not at all intend to reopen the vexatious question of vicarious work for victims of the Holocaust.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Posted from Jerusalem, Israel<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 For its dramatic setting and its architecture, this has long been among my very favorite temples: \u00a0 \u201cOakland California Temple Opens Doors to the Public After Renovation:\u00a0This house of the Lord was first dedicated in 1964 by Church President David O.
