Oaks, the first counselor in the LDS Church\u2019s First Presidency, observed in \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/general-conference\/1994\/10\/worship-through-music?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Worship through Music<\/a>,\u201d \u201cis one of the best ways to learn the doctrine of the restored gospel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">And, indeed, Latter-day Saint hymn lyrics, taken altogether, summarize essential church teachings remarkably well. Located at the very core of regular Mormon worship, they provide an instructive and reliable picture of what members of The <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> believe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">Some hymns (like the originally German \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/hark-all-ye-nations?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hark, All Ye Nations!<\/a>\u201d celebrate the Restoration. Others contain concepts unique to the Restoration. For example, \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/joseph-smiths-first-prayer?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Joseph Smith\u2019s First Prayer<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/praise-to-the-man?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Praise to the Man<\/a>\u201d recall the story of the founding prophet and \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/an-angel-from-on-high-mens-choir?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">An Angel from on High<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/the-iron-rod?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Iron Rod<\/a>\u201d summarize the recovery of the Book of Mormon. Some hymns focus on priesthood authority and duties (e.g., \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/ye-elders-of-israel-men?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ye Elders of Israel<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/come-all-ye-sons-of-god-men?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Come, All Ye Sons of God<\/a>\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">Others emphasize the blessings of LDS temples, including sealings for eternity (examples include \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/families-can-be-together-forever?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Families Can Be Together Forever<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/rise-ye-saints-and-temples-enter?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rise Ye Saints and Temples Enter,<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/how-beautiful-thy-temples-lord?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">How Beautiful Thy Temples, Lord<\/a>\u201d) and salvation for the dead (e.g, \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/high-on-the-mountain-top?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">High on the Mountain Top<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/holy-temples-on-mount-zion?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Holy Temples on Mount Zion<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/rejoice-ye-saints-of-latter-days?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rejoice, Ye Saints of Latter Days<\/a>\u201d). Still others exult in continuing revelation (e.g., \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/we-thank-thee-o-god-for-a-prophet?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/come-listen-to-a-prophets-voice?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Come, Listen to a Prophet\u2019s Voice<\/a>\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">Some hymns (such as \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/if-you-could-hie-to-kolob?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">If You Could Hie to Kolob\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/o-my-father?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">O My Father<\/a>\u201d) highlight distinctive <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Mormon theology<\/a>. \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/our-saviors-love?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Our Savior\u2019s Love<\/a>\u201d carefully devotes each of its three verses to a member of the Godhead, understood by Latter-day Saints to consist of three distinct personages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">Some hymns commemorate the unique LDS pioneer heritage. Both multigenerational members and recent converts sing \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/come-come-ye-saints?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Come, Come, Ye Saints<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/for-the-strength-of-the-hills?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">For the Strength of the Hills<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/carry-on?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Carry On<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/o-ye-mountains-high?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">O Ye Mountains High<\/a>.\u201d Reflecting the LDS Church\u2019s often embattled history and its sometimes embattled present, some hymns (e.g., \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/up-awake-ye-defenders-of-zion?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Up, Awake, Ye Defenders of Zion<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/true-to-the-faith?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">True to the Faith<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/as-zions-youth-in-latter-days?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">As Zion\u2019s Youth in Latter Days<\/a>\u201d) are resolute, even defiant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">This is as it should be. The LDS Church makes unique claims and teaches unique doctrines that distinguish it from mainstream Christianity. Mormonism freely and unapologetically acknowledges its uniqueness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">But Latter-day Saints remain Christians despite their distinctiveness, as the official hymnal both reflects and demonstrates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">For example, it contains numerous hymns associated with major mainstream Christian figures, including J. S. Bach (\u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/o-savior-thou-who-wearest-a-crown?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">O Savior, Thou Who Wearest a Crown<\/a>\u201d), Martin Luther (\u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/a-mighty-fortress-is-our-god?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">A Mighty Fortress is Our God<\/a>\u201d), and the 18th-century English Christian poet William Cowper (\u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/god-moves-in-a-mysterious-way?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">God Moves in a Mysterious Way<\/a>\u201d). \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/praise-god-from-whom-all-blessings-flow?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow<\/a>\u201d is a 17th-century Anglican \u201cdoxology.\u201d Ten Latter-day Saint hymns come from the great English Protestant minister and hymn writer\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/search?query=Isaac+Watts+&amp;x=0&amp;y=0&amp;lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Isaac Watts<\/a>\u00a0(d. 1748), while six were composed by the famous Methodist leader\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/search?query=Charles+Wesley+&amp;x=0&amp;y=0&amp;lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Charles Wesley<\/a>(d. 1788), younger brother to Methodism\u2019s founder, John Wesley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">\u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/sing-praise-to-him?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sing Praise to Him<\/a>\u201d comes from the 16th-century \u201cBohemian Brethren\u2019s Songbook.\u201d \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/praise-to-the-lord-the-almighty?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Praise to the Lord, the Almighty<\/a>\u201d derives from the 17th-century \u201cStralsund Gesangbuch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">But the LDS hymnal doesn\u2019t draw solely from Protestant sources: St. Francis of Assisi (d. A.D. 1226) wrote the original-language words to \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/all-creatures-of-our-god-and-king?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">All Creatures of Our God and King<\/a>,\u201d while those of \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/all-glory-laud-and-honor?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">All Glory, Laud, and Hono<\/a>r\u201d were penned by Theodolph of Orleans (d. A.D. 821). The original Latin lyrics of \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/jesus-the-very-thought-of-thee?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee<\/a>\u201d are ascribed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux (d. A.D. 1153). \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/lead-kindly-light?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lead, Kindly Light<\/a>\u201d was written by the great John Henry Cardinal Newman (d. 1890).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">Such hymns as \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/how-wondrous-and-great?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">How Wondrous and Great<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/glory-to-god-on-high?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Glory to God on High<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/because-i-have-been-given-much?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Because I Have Been Given Much<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/glorious-things-of-thee-are-spoken?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/how-great-thou-art?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">How Great Thou Art<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/we-are-all-enlisted?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">We Are All Enlisted<\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/cast-thy-burden-upon-the-lord?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cast Thy Burden upon the Lord<\/a>\u201d (with Mendelssohn\u2019s wonderful melody), \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/lord-dismiss-us-with-thy-blessing?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lord, Dismiss Us with Thy Blessing<\/a>\u201d (sung to a tune by the French-Swiss philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau), and Rudyard Kipling\u2019s great \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/god-of-our-fathers-known-of-old?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">God of Our Fathers, Known of Old<\/a>\u201d originated well outside (and often before) the LDS Church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">Apart from the uniquely Mormon \u201c<a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/music\/library\/hymns\/far-far-away-on-judeas-plains?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Far, Far Away on Judea\u2019s Plains<\/a>,\u201d Latter-day Saints celebrate Easter and Christmas squarely within the mainstream tradition of Christian hymns and carols. And, virtually every week, church members memorialize the Savior\u2019s atoning sacrifice via prescribed prayers and in songs uniquely suited to that purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\">In other words, the hymns used by Latter-day Saints in worship unmistakably identify them as a unique kind of Christians, just as they believe and claim.
