18:20, 36<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>1.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The fact that Judas needed to identify Jesus (ironically, with a kiss) for those who had been sent to arrest the Savior demonstrates that Jesus didn\u2019t have an unusual appearance. \u00a0He didn\u2019t, for example, habitually levitate six inches off the ground, or glow, or wear luminescent\u00a0white robes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is obvious, of course, when we think about it. \u00a0But I mention it because it forces the question (to me, at least), \u201cWould <em>I<\/em> have recognized him, had I lived in his day?\u201d \u00a0It\u2019s easy to look down upon those first-century Jews who failed to accept him as the Son of God. \u00a0But was his deity really so obvious?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>2.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The incident in which Peter cuts off the ear of \u201cthe high priest\u2019s servant\u201d (which is soon restored by Jesus) is very interesting.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m indebted to my friend and former FARMS\/Maxwell Institute colleague Kent Brown for alerting me to these matters.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How does one cut off an ear with a sword, without doing serious damage elsewhere to the target\u2019s body? \u00a0The momentum of a sideways stroke would carry the sword into the victim\u2019s head. \u00a0An upward stroke is difficult to imagine. \u00a0It would be hard to get sufficient strength behind the blow. \u00a0A downward stroke would almost certainly have continued on into the victim\u2019s neck or shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The severing of merely an ear is difficult to see as anything other than deliberate.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But what would motivate the infliction of so specific a wound?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>John says that the name of the high priest\u2019s servant was Malchus [<span style=\"color: #001320;\">\u039c\u03ac\u03bb\u03c7\u03bf\u03c2<\/span>]. \u00a0That seems pretty obviously to be a Greek form of a name based upon the common Semitic root <em>MLK<\/em>, which refers to royalty. \u00a0(Think of biblical names such as <em>Abimelech<\/em> [\u201cMy father is (a) king\u201d] and <em>Melchizedek<\/em> [\u201cMy king is righteous\u2019] and, for that matter, of the San Bernardino murderess Tashfeen Malik.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Was Malchus a member of the high priest\u2019s (aristocratic) family? \u00a0Was he in line as a possible high priest himself? \u00a0One of the requirements for the high priest was that he be free of physical deformities. \u00a0A missing ear would have disqualified a candidate for the office. \u00a0Could the severing of the ear have been a deliberate (and rather malicious) attempt not to kill him but to, in effect, ruin his career prospects?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just thinking aloud.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Posted from London, England<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Matthew 26:47-56 Mark 14:43-52 Luke 22:47-53 John 18:2-12 Compare John 17:12;
