John 14:23<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to imagine that \u201csome doubted\u201d even in the presence of the resurrected Lord. \u00a0But the fact of death is so universally well known and so widely understood as definitive, and wishful thinking so generally understood to be a dangerous spur to error, that some still wondered whether it was all too good to be true. \u00a0So much, I suppose, for the complacent modern notion that ancient people were credulous while we chronologically superior mortals are guided by pure, dispassionate reason.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve encountered some critics of <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Mormonism<\/a> who\u2019ve claimed that Christ\u2019s promise to be with his disciples \u201calway, even unto the end of the world,\u201d rules out the possibility of a universal apostasy. \u00a0But the phrase\u00a0translated by the King James as \u201ceven unto the end of the world\u201d is\u00a0<span style=\"color: #001320;\">\u1f15\u03c9\u03c2 \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2 \u03c3\u03c5\u03bd\u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03b1\u1f30\u1ff6\u03bd\u03bf\u03c2, and that last word,\u00a0\u03b1\u1f30\u1ff6\u03bd (compare English <em>eon<\/em> or <em>aeon<\/em>) could just as easily be rendered as \u201cage\u201d or \u201cperiod\u201d or, even, I suppose, \u201cdispensation.\u201d \u00a0So Jesus could have been saying that he would be with them \u201cto the close of the age\u201d or \u201cuntil the completion of the age,\u201d or \u201cuntil the close of the dispensation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Posted from Jerusalem, Israel<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Luke 24:36-43 John 20:19-29 Compare Matthew 16:19;
