{"id":74766,"date":"2019-06-06T14:54:29","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T20:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/?p=74766"},"modified":"2019-06-06T14:54:29","modified_gmt":"2019-06-06T20:54:29","slug":"an-evening-on-mount-scopus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2019\/06\/an-evening-on-mount-scopus.html","title":{"rendered":"An evening on Mount Scopus"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62114\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62114\" style=\"width: 468px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/06\/8228d3daea06910e20ac6054066443a2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-62114\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/06\/8228d3daea06910e20ac6054066443a2.jpg\" alt=\"Adam Farnes took this picture of the BYU J'lem Center\" width=\"468\" height=\"486\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-62114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brigham Young University\u2019s Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies by night, in a Wikimedia Commons photo apparently taken by Adam Farnes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re just back from a really fantastic evening at Brigham Young University\u2019s Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies, put on especially for our group, which is the National Advisory Council for BYU\u2019s Marriott School of Business.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a brief tour of the grounds, we had an excellent evening meal out on the patio of the Jerusalem Center, with its incomparable view of the Dome of the Rock, the Temple Mount, and the Old City, toward the west across the Kidron Valley (the King James Bible\u2019s \u201cbrook Cedron\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then \u00a0we listened, in the main hall of the Center, to a history by <a href=\"https:\/\/economics.byu.edu\/Pages\/Faculty%20Pages\/Jim-R.-Kearl.aspx\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Kearl<\/a> of the Church\u2019s involvement with the Holy Land from the time of Orson Hyde\u2019s historic visit in 1841 through the construction of the Jerusalem Center. \u00a0Jim has been the assistant to the president of BYU for the Jerusalem Center since \u2014 incredibly \u2014 1989.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following Jim\u2019s presentation, we enjoyed a special concert in the Center\u2019s main hall, which also has a marvelous view of the Old City. \u00a0By this point, the Dome of the Rock was beautifully illuminated, as were the Old City\u2019s early-sixteenth-century Ottoman walls, built by order of the Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The first part of the concert involved a duo consisting of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artpro.co.il\/instrumentalists\/asi-matathias.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Asi Matathias<\/a> on the violin, accompanied on the piano by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vstanislavsky.com\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Victor Stanislavsky<\/a>. \u00a0They played Camille Saint-Sa\u00ebns, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qdmz1PjC1oM\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sonata in D minor op. 75<\/a>, and Pablo de Sarasate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wEmbFSiJzEQ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cZigeunerweisen\u201d (\u201cGypsy Airs\u201d) Op. 20<\/a>. \u00a0Matathias\u2019s playing was breathtaking. \u00a0His speed was phenomenal, and his tone had an almost unearthly quality. \u00a0He received an enthusiastic standing ovation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The soprano <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keren-hadar.com\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Keren Hadar<\/a> then provided a dramatic change of pace, again accompanied by Victor Stanislavsky. She sang <a href=\"http:\/\/chorus%20Hebrew%20slaves%20Nabucco\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the chorus of the Hebrew slaves from Verdi\u2019s <em>Nabucco<\/em><\/a> \u2014 interestingly, in Hebrew \u2014 followed by Gershwin\u2019s \u201cIt ain\u2019t necessarily so\u201d and Michel Legrand\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RR7aODhhzcg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cWindmills of Your Mind\u201d<\/a> and then by Carlos Gardel\u2019s and Alfredo Le Pera\u2019s famous tango \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Gcxv7i02lXc\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Por una cabeza.\u201d<\/a> \u00a0(Gardel and Le Pera, I learned, were killed in a 1935 plane crash at the height of their careers, just weeks after they had written the song.) \u00a0She finished up her part of the program with \u201cLife is Beautiful,\u201d from the film of that name, Aretha Franklin\u2019s \u201cI say a little prayer for you,\u201d and two encores: \u00a0One of them was in Hebrew and I didn\u2019t catch its name, while the second was Leonard Cohen\u2019s \u201cHallelujah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Keren Hadar was personable, lively, dramatic, funny, and very, very good, and she too received a standing ovation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Posted from Jerusalem, Israel<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 We\u2019re just back from a really fantastic evening at Brigham Young University\u2019s Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies, put on especially for our group, which is the National Advisory Council for BYU\u2019s Marriott School of Business. \u00a0 After a brief tour of the grounds, we had an excellent evening meal out on the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1019,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-74766","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>An evening on Mount Scopus<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"&nbsp;
