The Western (or Wailing) Wall and the Dome of the Rock. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain image.) \u00a0There can be no doubt whatever about the literal reality and location of the \u201cJerusalem\u201d mentioned in the Book of Mormon. \u00a0The consensus regarding such places as Zarahemla, however, is less robust, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> takes no official position on their GPS coordinates.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It hasn\u2019t, perhaps, been the best of times to be an advocate of the so-called \u201cHeartland model\u201d of Book of Mormon geography. \u00a0It may, in fact, be the worst of times. \u00a0Certainly some of the major expressions of the theory have been coming under quite vigorous criticism of late. \u00a0Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n

In this context, it\u2019s perhaps worthwhile to call attention once more to the Church\u2019s recent official statement on \u201cBook of Mormon Geography,\u201d<\/a> which includes the following:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Church does not take a position on the specific geographic locations of Book of Mormon events in the ancient Americas. . . . \u00a0Individuals may have their own opinions regarding Book of Mormon geography and other such matters about which the Lord has not spoken. However, the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles urge leaders and members not to advocate those personal theories in any setting or manner that would imply either prophetic or Church support for those theories.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Personally speaking, I myself would have far less interest in \u201cHeartland\u201d theories about the Book of Mormon than I do \u2014 and my interest, candidly, is already minimal \u2014 if their advocates weren\u2019t continually suggesting that we who find their models unconvincing are apostates who reject the words of the modern prophets.<\/p>\n
