A second temple is now being built in the city, in the (northern) Los Olivos District.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Much as certain of my critics might desire it, I have not been swallowed up by the Amazon rainforest.\u00a0 But my ability to blog was temporarily impaired to the point of quite ungratifying frustration.\u00a0 So I stopped trying.<\/p>\n

WiFi simply isn\u2019t always quite up to standard when one is traveling.\u00a0 It\u2019s actually been quite good out here in the jungle \u2013 I mean, we\u2019re in the jungle<\/em>, for goodness\u2019 sake! \u2013 but I\u2019ve generally been able to read things and was even able to post two blog entries, although, in the end, I just spent far too much time watching the little wheel spin.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
But the fact remains that we live in a remarkable era, when such means of communication, while still imperfect, are even thinkable<\/em>.\u00a0 And they\u2019re becoming steadily better.\u00a0 Back in December\/January, for example, when we were on a Nile river boat, there was a charge<\/em> for WiFi, and, on balance, it didn\u2019t really work.\u00a0 Which is the way things had been for the past several visits.\u00a0 No surprise, actually:\u00a0 When you\u2019re on a boat in rural southern Egypt, you don\u2019t really expect much in terms of communications technology.\u00a0 At least, based on experience with Egypt going back to the late 1970s, I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 This last time, in May, however, WiFi was available at no extra charge \u2013 and it actually worked!\u00a0 I was bowled over.\u00a0 Blown away.\u00a0 Totally surprised.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
During the period that we lived in Egypt, 1978-1982, we made only two telephone calls home.\u00a0 One of them, responding to a telegram from my brother telling me that my father had suffered a heart attack, took twenty-four hours to get through to the United States.\u00a0 I had to go to a government office to make the call; I was trying to find out whether he was still alive.\u00a0 The second call was to notify folks back home of the arrival of our firstborn child.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Nowadays, cell phone calls between Egypt and the United States are routine \u2013 as, of course, are internet messages.\u00a0 We felt almost completely cut off from home during that time living in Cairo.\u00a0 Today, feelings of isolation and separation are basically unnecessary.\u00a0 People can easily connect with Skype and so forth.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
These young-uns have it so easy.\u00a0 Why, when I was a boy, we walked uphill to school both ways, through ten feet of snow even in July.\u00a0 It jes\u2019 ain\u2019t fair, no-how.<\/p>\n
