We were up really early this morning for a 5 AM boat trip back to Iquitos.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
When we were first out on the water, the river was dark, but the moon was shining through a partly cloudy sky.\u00a0 It was quite beautiful.\u00a0 And also, rather surprisingly, even a bit cool as we hurtled along at a fairly high speed upstream,\u00a0 Later, as the sun began to rise, the sky to the east became golden over the forest, as did the tranquil water of the slowly-flowing river.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The ride took us about forty-five minutes or so, and then we rode in a van to the airport for an uneventful flight to Lima, where we met a lady from Australia who is just joining our tour today.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, our morning flight from Lima to Cusco was cancelled several days ago, as we already knew.\u00a0 So we\u2019ve been obliged to sit here in the Lima airport for hours \u2013 eventually, it will have been seven \u2014 waiting for our afternoon flight up into the Andes.\u00a0 With a limit of one hour of internet service,<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019m not, on the whole, a wildly enthusiastic fan of airlines.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Imagine if you were to go to, say, Wonderburger Supreme and order a double bacon cheeseburger with fries, only to be told, after they\u2019ve taken your money, that you\u2019ll be given a single-patty El Cheapo burger instead, after seven hours. \u00a0And, by the way, no fries and no refund. \u00a0In the meantime, you should sit on the curb and wait.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve had more flight delays than I can count over the course of my traveling life, and more than a few flight cancellations.\u00a0 (Such cancellations are especially fun when you\u2019ve been in the airport since early morning, suffering through multiple half-hour postponements.) \u00a0You need to be in Gotham City for a 7 PM lecture?\u00a0 You bought a ticket for a flight to Gotham arriving that afternoon at 1 PM?\u00a0 You think that that will allow you enough time?\u00a0 Really?\u00a0 We\u2019ll get you there the following morning at 11:35 AM.\u00a0 And you paid extra to fly business class?\u00a0 Ha!\u00a0 The joke\u2019s on you!\u00a0 Take the middle seat back on row 123 and be satisfied.\u00a0 And no, there won\u2019t be a refund.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Oh well.\u00a0 There\u2019s nothing to be done.\u00a0 But I can now say, with authority, that the ham and cheese empanadas at Delicass, a caf\u00e9 in the Lima airport, are very, very good.\u00a0 \u201cComo en casa,\u201d says their sign.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t think that I\u2019ve ever had one that good at home.\u00a0 The ground beef empanada is also very good.\u00a0 My wife didn\u2019t like it as well, but I absolutely did.\u00a0 And my wife has<\/em> made a beef<\/em> empanada that was its equal.\u00a0 (She\u2019s watching over my shoulder.)<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
