streets.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many of the streets in the central city (including the street on which our hotel sits) were blocked off and shut down today for a parade. \u00a0People were out in their finery, with their children and grandchildren. \u00a0The music of marching bands reverberated through the old colonial streets.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption-text\">All dressed up.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As a matter of religious history, Cusco\u2019s celebration of the feast of Corpus Christi is extraordinarily interesting. \u00a0At least, according to the description given by our Catholic local guide.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75216\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75216\" style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/06\/IMG_0676-e1561075200603.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-75216\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/06\/IMG_0676-e1561075200603.jpg\" cathedral<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow \u2014 21 June 2019 \u2014 will be the solstice. \u00a0It will be the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere while, of course, it will be the winter solstice here in the southern hemisphere. \u00a0That is, here in the south, it will be the day on which the sun is furthest from the solar equator and the day on which it begins to move back toward the (here, spring or vernal) equinox, when night and day are of equal length. \u00a0To put it yet another way, it will represent the beginning of the triumph of the sun and its light over the darkness of winter. \u00a0For the Incas, the winter solstice was New Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75219\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75219\" style=\"width: 576px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/06\/IMG_0699-e1561075381503.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" Corpus Christi procession<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate, they played music and had a parade. \u00a0In the parade, they carried the mummified remains of the previous Inca rulers and other dignitaries around. \u00a0Being dead, these rulers, who had been regarded as gods (the sons of the sun), were now mediators for the people in heaven. \u00a0Traditionally, fifteen of these mummies were carried about, splendidly dressed, with gold for their eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75225\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75225\" style=\"width:
