(LDS.org)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When I was fairly young, I dreamed of someday being an architect. \u00a0I had visions of designing grand and glorious buildings. \u00a0The only factor that stopped me from seeking to fulfill that dream was an absolute and utter lack of even the slightest smidgin of talent \u2014 something that, I freely grant, hasn\u2019t stopped certain others from entering the field (or even from having considerable success in it).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64557\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64557\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/08\/Untitled-1-2-1440x640.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-64557\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/08\/Untitled-1-2-1440x640.jpg\" alt=\"Wright's Oak Park masterpiece\" width=\"597\" height=\"265\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64557\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Unity Temple, in Oak Park, Illinois, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and completed around 1908, plainly influenced Pope and Burton\u2019s creation of the Cardston Alberta Temple.<br>(Wikimedia Commons public domain photograph)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By the time I was sixteen or so, when I first read Ayn Rand\u2019s novel <em>The Fountainhead<\/em>, I had already abandoned any and all ambition of creating architecture. \u00a0But that novel, which is based (sometimes quite loosely and sometimes surprisingly faithfully, if one may use the word <em>faith<\/em> in connection with Ayn Rand!) on the life of the young Frank Lloyd Wright, didn\u2019t diminish my interest in architecture.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19703\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19703\" style=\"width: 446px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/04\/446px-Wayfarers.2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19703\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/04\/446px-Wayfarers.2.jpg\" alt=\"Wayfarers Chapel interior\" width=\"446\" height=\"599\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lloyd Wright\u2019s Wayfarers Chapel. located on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Rancho Palos Verdes, California<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And, in fact, I\u2019ve long loved Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s work in particular (along with his son Lloyd Wright\u2019s Wayfarers Chapel along the Pacific shore of Southern California).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By that time, though, I had also become quite committed to the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a>, and what I most wished that I could have done was to have designed temples.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26011\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26011\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/09\/800px-Laie_Hawaii_Temple_1400.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-26011\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/09\/800px-Laie_Hawaii_Temple_1400.jpg\" alt=\"Hawaii's very first LDS temple\" width=\"599\" height=\"434\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 1919 Laie Hawaii Temple (LDS Media Library)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Which, I suppose, is connected with my love for the Cardston Alberta Temple, which has sometimes been labeled \u201cthe first of the modern temples.\u201d \u00a0It was designed by Hyrum Pope (1880-1939) and Harold W.
