Nelson)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My wife and I spent the first half of today at the viewing and funeral for our friend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2019\/07\/arnold-h-green-1940-2019.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Arnold H. Green<\/a>. (His obituary can be read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldextra.com\/lifestyles\/announcements\/obituaries\/arnold-harrison-green\/article_13f075c4-4e93-5b27-999a-5a45b24905f3.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.) \u00a0It was a wonderful and inspiring service. \u00a0The chapel and cultural hall were full of friends and colleagues and former colleagues. \u00a0It was a great reunion, though nothing like the one that Arnie has been enjoying on the other side..<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The simple but profound words above, from President Russell M. Nelson, appeared in the funeral program that was designed by members of Arnie\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76413\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76413\" style=\"width: 144px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/07\/GreenArnold-bw.gif\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-76413\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/07\/GreenArnold-bw.gif\" alt=\"Arnie, as I remember him\" width=\"144\" height=\"185\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76413\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Arnold H. Green, of BYU<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The family also chose to include in the funeral program two quotations from a devotional address that Arnie delivered at Brigham Young University on 5 July 2005 under the title <a href=\"https:\/\/speeches.byu.edu\/talks\/arnold-h-green\/discernment-journeying-babylon-athens-zion\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cDiscernment for Journeying Through Babylon to Athens and Zion\u201d<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>\u201cI pray that we shall resolve to discern our way to worthy destinations in mortal life; that we shall resolve to strengthen our minds to appreciate with exhilaration our intellectual heritage, to understand our complex world more fully, and to love the Lord and serve His children more effectively; and that we shall resolve to consecrate and sanctify ourselves, our assets, and our environments.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39198\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39198\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/01\/All_Gizah_Pyramids.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-39198\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/01\/All_Gizah_Pyramids.jpg\" alt=\"Al-Ahramaat\" width=\"597\" height=\"397\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An image of the famous Giza complex near Cairo was included in the program, emblematic of one important phase of Arnie Green\u2019s life. \u00a0He was a professor at the American University in Cairo for many years, and served as president of the Cairo LDS Branch. (Wikimedia Commons public domain photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>\u201cWe start with our personal core and proceed outward to whatever periphery our influence can reach. \u00a0If we are blessed with wealth, we consecrate it to the Lord \u2014 who \u00a0told Martin Harris not to covet his own property. \u00a0If we are blessed with learning, we devote it to strengthening God\u2019s enterprises and His children \u2014 our brothers and sisters. \u00a0In that regard, so many scriptures pair worshipping God with serving our fellow beings that we must regard them as symbiotic, mutually necessary endeavors. \u00a0We can\u2019t serve God effectively without serving each other effectively.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44709\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44709\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/10\/jerusalem-center-byu-1316213-gallery-1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-44709\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/10\/jerusalem-center-byu-1316213-gallery-1.jpg\" alt=\"BYU's J'lem Center, near dusk\" width=\"597\" height=\"400\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44709\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Another image included in the program was one of Brigham Young University\u2019s Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies, located on Mount Scopus (which is, essentially, the Mount of Olives), near the main campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
