Asma Uddin<\/a>\u00a0is an increasingly prominent and increasingly significant Muslim voice in America. \u00a0And she has a special friendship for Latter-day Saints:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And she\u2019s precisely right to do it. \u00a0Moreover, Latter-day Saints should be paying close attention: We\u2019re not as high above the Muslims on the popularity scale of American religions as we might imagine ourselves to be, and I, at least, have seen plenty of attempts to deprive the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> of its status as a religion. \u00a0The Church isn\u2019t really a faith tradition, you see; it\u2019s a real estate holding company. \u00a0Or a political conspiracy. \u00a0Or whatever. \u00a0If we acquiesce in the de-religionizing of Islam, we\u2019ll have only ourselves to blame when triumphalist religious bigots come after us next.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And that might well be, among many other things, ironic:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

When you think about it, the Latter-day Saint situation in United States public opinion isn\u2019t altogether different from that of the Muslims: \u00a0The political left disdains us as corporate, patriarchal, sexist, racially bigoted, socially conservative, and so forth, while many on the political right dislike us for religious reasons.<\/p>\n
