T. Suzuki, and, of course, Herman Hesse\u2019s <em>Siddhartha<\/em>,\u00a0which was really in vogue among young aspiring intellectuals in late-1960s California) and I\u2019ve done a little bit of reading on Buddhism since then, as well. \u00a0But I\u2019m by no means an expert on Buddhism, and I don\u2019t claim to be.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So I\u2019m going to sketch out a line of thinking here and invite anybody who <em>does<\/em> know anything about Buddhism to weigh in, to tell me whether I\u2019m completely off base or not:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My impression is that, in a certain sense, Buddhism and Christianity (certainly the LDS understanding of Christianity) are polar opposites in their conception of the nature of human salvation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Buddhism is focused on overcoming or escaping suffering. \u00a0Buddhism\u2019s \u201cFour Noble Truths,\u201d purportedly the heart of essence of the teaching of the Buddha, are<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0truth\u00a0of suffering<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0truth\u00a0of the cause of suffering<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0truth\u00a0of the end of suffering<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0truth\u00a0of the path that leads to the end of suffering.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How can we escape suffering? \u00a0Through enlightenment (<em>bodhi<\/em>, or, in Japanese Buddhism, <em>satori<\/em>), which leads to \u201cdetachment\u201d or \u201cnon-attachment.\u201d \u00a0That\u2019s the point behind the familiar look of serenity on the face of the Buddha in statuary and in other representations of him.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My sense is that Christianity, by contrast, emphasizes a vast <em>expansion<\/em> of care and concern \u2014 and thus of \u201cattachment.\u201d \u00a0We\u2019re still promised deliverance from pain and sorrow and suffering. \u00a0But that won\u2019t come through non-attachment. \u00a0And it won\u2019t come through our own efforts. \u00a0It will come from divine grace.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Permit me a metaphor: \u00a0Each of us is surrounded by a soap bubble like those sometimes produced by children playing outdoors. \u00a0The surface of that bubble represents our capacity to be hurt; within it are the people and things that we care about. \u00a0The larger that surface is, the more vulnerable we are to pain. \u00a0If we shrink to caring only about ourselves, we can still be hurt, but if we expand it to include loved ones \u2014 or possessions, or ambitions, or whatever \u2014 we increase our vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Buddhism, I think, teaches that we should shrink that \u201cbubble\u201d to the point of disappearance, while Christianity, certainly the Latter-day Saint reading of Christianity, wants us to vastly <em>increase<\/em> our circle of caring. \u00a0That\u2019s one of the reasons that I consider the shortest of all biblical verses, John 11:35, among the Bible\u2019s most significant passages, and why I\u2019m so fond of Moses 7. \u00a0(See my column <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/865595143\/The-most-moved-mover.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cReconsidering the emotions of God.\u201d<\/a>) \u00a0God himself is not \u201cunattached\u201d; he loves the world (<a href=\"http:\/\/for%20god%20so%20loved%20the%20world\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John 3:16<\/a>) and his purposes are entirely other-centered (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/pgp\/moses\/1?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Moses 1:39<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, please don\u2019t imagine that I\u2019m saying that Buddhists aren\u2019t or cannot be kind and charitable. \u00a0They certainly can be, and many <em>are<\/em>. \u00a0(One of my heroes is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/765573699\/Indian-ruler-sowed-seeds-of-Buddhism.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the third-century BC Buddhist emperor of India, Ashoka<\/a>.) \u00a0But, ideally, they are to be kind and charitable with an attitude of serene non-attachment.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The classic illustration of this is the Buddha himself. \u00a0But there are others like him who, although they have already achieved enlightenment in some previous life and, thus, could have stepped away from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, have returned to this world of pain and suffering as <em>bodhisattvas<\/em>.\u00a0 They do this\u00a0out of selfless (and serene!) compassion, in order to help <em>others<\/em> achieve enlightenment.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In this regard, Buddhism\u2019s view of the\u00a0<em>bodhisattvas\u00a0<\/em>is quite like the Christian view of the saving Son of God, as it is classically expressed in the traditional Credo, <em>qui propter nos homines,\u00a0et propter nostram salutem descendit de caelis<\/em> (\u201cwho, for us humans and for our salvation, came down from heaven\u201d). \u00a0The Book of Mormon terms this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseretnews.com\/article\/700209032\/Pure-love-led-Christ-to-descend-the-courts-of-glory.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cthe condescension of God.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Do I have this all wrong?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 In my teens, I did a bit of reading on Buddhism (e.g., some Alan Watts, a dab of D.
