Anyway, I was disappointed. \u00a0I kept wondering whether I just wasn\u2019t in the right mood, or something. \u00a0Afterwards, though, I talked it over with my wife, the theater major. \u00a0Her reaction was identical to mine.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Still, it\u2019s Macbeth<\/em>. \u00a0It\u2019s Shakespeare<\/em>. \u00a0In fact, it\u2019s great<\/em> Shakespeare. \u00a0So I don\u2019t regret attending the performance. \u00a0Not even slightly. \u00a0For one thing, the language is glorious.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTo-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow,<\/span>
\n Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,<\/span>
\n To the last syllable of recorded time;<\/span>
\n And all our yesterdays have lighted fools<\/span>
\n The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!<\/span>
\n Life\u2019s but a walking shadow, a poor player,<\/span>
\n That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,<\/span>
\n And then is heard no more. It is a tale<\/span>
\n Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,<\/span>
\n Signifying nothing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Macbeth\u2019s response, above, to the death of his wife \u2014 who probably committed suicide on account of her consuming and well-justified guilt \u2014 is as good a summation of the nihilistic implications of the atheistic worldview as any that I can imagine.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
And Banquo\u2019s reminder to Macbeth after their encounter with the prophesying \u201cweird sisters\u201d out on the heath, which Macbeth would have done very well to heed, remains worthy of our attention today:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cBut tis strange: And oftentimes, to win us to our harm, the Instruments of Darkness tell us truths, win us with honest trifles, to betray\u2019s in deepest consequence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
