Townsend (1849-1942) wrote the lyrics to the hymn:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Oh, what songs of the heart<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> We shall sing all the day,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> When again we assemble at home,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> When we meet ne\u2019er to part<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> With the blest o\u2019er the way,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> There no more from our loved ones to roam!<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> When we meet ne\u2019er to part,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> Oh, what songs of the heart<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> We shall sing in our beautiful home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Tho our rapture and bliss<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> There\u2019s no song can express,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> We will shout, we will sing o\u2019er and o\u2019er,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> As we greet with a kiss,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> And with joy we caress<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> All our loved ones that passed on before;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> As we greet with a kiss,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> In our rapture and bliss,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> All our loved ones that passed on before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Oh, the visions we\u2019ll see<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> In that home of the blest,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> There\u2019s no word, there\u2019s no thought can impart,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> But our rapture will be<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> All the soul can attest,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> In the heavenly songs of the heart;<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> But our rapture will be<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> In the vision we\u2019ll see<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> Best expressed in the songs of the heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Oh, what songs we\u2019ll employ!<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> Oh, what welcome we\u2019ll hear!<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> While our transports of love are complete,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> As the heart swells with joy<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> In embraces most dear<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> When our heavenly parents we meet!<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> As the heart swells with joy,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> Oh, what songs we\u2019ll employ,<\/span><br>\n<span style=\"color: #003300;\"> When our heavenly parents we meet!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sitting there in the temple, I also recalled a passage from the writings of Elisabeth K\u00fcbler-Ross (1926-2004), the famous Swiss-American physician, psychiatrist, and author of, among many other things, the pioneering 1969 book <em>On Death and Dying<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\">[P]eople will also be aware that it is impossible to die alone. This also includes someone who dies of thirst in a desert hundreds of miles from the next human being, or an astronaut missing the target and circling around in the universe until he dies of lack of oxygen. . . .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\">[D]ying patients become aware of the presence of beings surrounding them who guide and help them. This is the first reason you cannot die alone. Young children often refer to them as \u201ctheir playmates.\u201d The churches have called them guardian angels. Most researchers would call them \u201cguides.\u201d It is not important what label we give them. It is important that we know that from the moment of birth, beginning with the taking of the first breath, until the moment when we make the transition and end this physical existence, we are in the presence of these guides or guardian angels. They will wait for us and help us in the transition from life to life after death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\">The second reason why we cannot die alone is that we will always be met by those who preceded us in death and whom we have loved. This could be a child we lost, perhaps decades earlier, or a grandmother, a father, a mother or another person who has been significant in our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was reminded especially, too, of the final stanza of this well-known hymn, written by John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890):<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol class=\"verses\">\n<li>\n<div class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Lead, kindly Light, amid th\u2019encircling gloom;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Lead thou me on!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">The night is dark, and I am far from home;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Lead thou me on!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">The distant scene\u2013one step enough for me.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">I was not ever thus, nor pray\u2019d that thou<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Shouldst lead me on.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">I loved to choose and see my path; but now,<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Lead thou me on!<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"line\"><span style=\"color: #003300;\">Pride ruled my will.
