Permit me to make a brief comment on the topic:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yes, it\u2019s awkward to make the shift from references to Mormonism<\/em> and the Mormon Church<\/em> to references to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/em>. \u00a0The full official title is long and unwieldy and unfamiliar to many people. \u00a0And computer searches still go overwhelmingly and with greater ease to Mormon<\/em>-related terms. \u00a0(Our anti-Mormon friends will certainly cling to that designation.)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

That said, I\u2019m wholly on board with President Nelson\u2019s call to emphasize the Church\u2019s official name. \u00a0It wasn\u2019t merely amusing when newspapers in Florida praised two churches \u2014 \u201cthe Mormon Church\u201d and \u201cThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints\u201d \u2014 for their efforts in the wake of major hurricane damage there several years back. \u00a0And it isn\u2019t good at all when people are confused about whether \u201cthe Mormon Church\u201d believes in Jesus as our Savior. \u00a0It will be much, much more difficult to make such errors when we\u2019re more widely known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or, even, as the Church of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Does the Book of Mormon Say About the Name of the Church?\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t want \u2014 I<\/em> certainly don\u2019t want \u2014 to be seen merely as Christians like everybody else. \u00a0But it\u2019s of fundamental importance that we be understood to be Christians<\/em>, as in fact we are<\/em>. \u00a0To the extent that our Christianity is obscured or even hidden, the Church\u2019s witness is muted and many who might otherwise listen to our message will be unwilling to do so.<\/p>\n
