Seeing the new Lion King<\/em> movie last night reminded me of one of my many notable contributions to world civilization. \u00a0It\u2019s entitled \u201cHakunu Murtaddan,\u201d and it\u2019s sung to the tune of\u00a0The Lion King\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>\u201cHakuna Matata.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In Arabic,\u00a0hakunu murtaddan<\/em>\u00a0means \u201cI\u2019ll be an apostate.\u201d \u00a0And yes, I know: \u00a0Purists will object that the phrase, which I invented, is a rather odd mishmash of Egyptian colloquial Arabic with (among other things) a hyper-classical indefinite accusative nominal ending. \u00a0But one does what one\u00a0must<\/em>\u00a0do in the noble\u00a0quest to create great art.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Other than that change, though, the lyrics of the original \u201cHakuna Matata\u201d required no alteration whatever. \u00a0That\u2019s the remarkable thing, of course, about many great works of genius such as this. \u00a0Once they\u2019ve been achieved, they seem obvious. \u00a0But only in retrospect.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The background to my creation is that I commonly see statements from ex-Mormons in which they celebrate their newfound freedom, the bliss that they\u2019ve attained now that they\u2019re no longer encumbered by the teachings, standards, and ideals of the Church.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Anyway, though, here are the lyrics for \u201cHakunu Murtaddan\u201d:<\/p>\n

Hakunu murtaddan!<\/em>\u00a0 What a wonderful phrase!<\/span>

It\u2019s a sad story, no doubt, but it\u2019s not quite the earth-shattering ecclesiastical scandal that some news outlets seemed to suggest:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cConcerning that \u2018prominent\u2019 \u2018Mormon\u2019 \u2018bishop\u2019 peeping around at a ladies dressing room\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I\u2019m reminded of a news account that I saw as a kid on one of the local Los Angeles television stations. \u00a0It was a profile, for some reason or another, of a grizzled old desert rat \u2014 at least, he seemed<\/em> old to very young me; he was maybe in his early fifties \u2014 who, the reporter told us at one point, was devoutly religious. \u00a0\u201cA priest in the Mormon Church<\/a>,\u201d no less. \u00a0Indeed! \u00a0The man was practically a Mormon cardinal if not altogether the Mormon pope<\/em>.<\/p>\n
