As always, the Middle East is in flux and a focus of differing opinions and controversy. \u00a0Here\u2019s some recent news regarding Israel:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs U.S. Jews Cool To Israel, Evangelicals Flock There As Tourists\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The baptismal site shown in the photos accompanying the article above is known as \u201cYardenit\u201d and is located on the River Jordan just south of Lake Kinnereth. (Lake Kinnereth, also called \u201cthe Lake of Tiberias\u201d is known among many Christians \u2014 though typically not among local Israelis or Palestinians \u2014 as \u201cthe sea of Galilee\u201d). \u00a0I\u2019m very familiar with it. \u00a0It\u2019s quite pleasant. \u00a0But if Yardenit is the site of Jesus\u2019 baptism at the hand of John the Baptist, I\u2019m a leprechaun.<\/p>\n

The article below takes issue with the article above:<\/p>\n

\u201cTourism to Israel is up, and it\u2019s obviously because of President Trump, right? Well, let\u2019s talk about that \u2026\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a piece that will certainly (and quite understandably) displease many American Jews. \u00a0And, in fact, it\u2019s pretty outspoken:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

An election is coming up in Israel, and it could be of historic significance:<\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael faces a possible turning point on 17th of September, with religion at the heart of it\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Benjamin Netanyahu (b. 1949)\u00a0is the\u00a0longest-serving\u00a0prime minister in Israeli history,\u00a0and the first Israeli prime minister to have been\u00a0born in Israel\u00a0after the\u00a0establishment of the Jewish state. \u00a0He has been a dominant presence in Israeli politics for the past quarter of a century. \u00a0He first served as prime minister from 1996 to 1999. \u00a0At his accession to the prime ministership, he was the youngest Israeli prime minister in history. \u00a0He regained the office in 2009 and has been prime minister since then. \u00a0But this looming election may be very close and, in fact, some are predicting that Netanyahu will lose. \u00a0We shall see.<\/p>\n
