(1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34728\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34728\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-06-30-at-9.03.27-PM.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-34728\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-06-30-at-9.03.27-PM-1024x768.png\" alt=\"Dad with dog in Europe\" width=\"597\" height=\"447\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dad with a friend, on the continent of Europe sometime in mid-1945.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In commemoration of his 106th birthday, which was on Saturday (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2019\/09\/the-spirit-of-elijah.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Spirit of Elijah\u201d<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My Norwegian grandmother wanted Dad to become a Lutheran minister, but, although he was surrounded by Scandinavian Lutherans in his region of rural North Dakota, he never felt \u201cthe call.\u201d \u00a0Years later, he would laughingly remember a pattern that he noticed among the pastors of his childhood: \u00a0Whenever they felt \u201ccalled\u201d to another church and congregation, he said, it was inevitably a larger and more lucrative one.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, after graduating from Starkweather High School, he went off to study forestry in (I believe) Bottineau, North Dakota, just a few miles from the Canadian border. \u00a0But the Great Depression was underway, and North Dakota\u2019s economy hadn\u2019t been especially robust in the first place. \u00a0Dad\u2019s oldest brother, George, headed off for the Promised Land of Southern California, and Dad eventually joined him there. \u00a0George had landed a job in the construction industry and, with his connections, Dad ultimately did as well. \u00a0Along the way, though, he spent some time in President Roosevelt\u2019s Civilian Conservation Corps, working mostly in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still seeking steady work, he joined the United States Cavalry \u2014 which still existed in the late 1930s and very early 1940s \u2014 for which he was serving along the border with Mexico when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. \u00a0That event transformed his life, along with the lives of millions of others. \u00a0He received a very pleasant note from Franklin Roosevelt informing him that he was now enlisted \u201cfor the duration of the war.\u201d \u00a0He always chuckled when he remembered the cheery way in which the letter opened. \u00a0\u201cGreetings!\u201d said President Roosevelt.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dad became a regular member of the United States Army, stationed at various times in such locations as Fort Benning, Georgia; the Army\u2019s German language school at the University of Chicago (where, without knowing it, he walked every day past the laboratories of Enrico Fermi\u2019s supersecret Manhattan Project); the elite military intelligence school at Camp Ritchie, Maryland (where Hugh Nibley was also assigned); and High Wycombe, England, between London and Oxford, where he spent his time analyzing aerial reconnaissance photos of the German lines. \u00a0In the end, coming to the European continent itself just after D-Day and the famous Battle of the Bulge, he was attached as a staff sergeant to the 11th Armored Division of General George S.
