***<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve been asked by Oxford University Press to revisit an annotated bibliography that I did for them some years ago concerning the Zaydi branch of Shi\u2018a Islam. \u00a0Since the Zaydis are predominantly located in Yemen, and since Yemen is currently quite a bit in the news, this is perhaps a timely opportunity. \u00a0Here is the beginning of the bibliography as it currently stands. \u00a0As I get a few moments, I intend to go through it in order to see what, if anything, I would add or substract or extend or modify. \u00a0Suggestions are welcome:<\/p>\n

Zaydiyya.\u00a0 Zaidiiya.\u00a0 Zaydiis.\u00a0 Zaidiis.\u00a0 Zaydism.\u00a0 Zaidism.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nThe Zaydiyya are a branch of Shi\u2018i Islam, often termed \u201cmoderate\u201d or \u201cthe practical group of the Shii\u2018a,\u201d that diverged from other Shi\u2018i factions in the course of the dispute over the succession to the imamate that followed\u00a0 the death of the fourth imam, \u2018Ali Zayn al-\u2018Abidin, in 713.\u00a0 Rejecting the claims of Muhammad al-Baqir, the Zaydis instead chose Zayd ibn \u2018Ali (d. 740), a grandson of the martyred Husayn, as the fifth imam (hence their name, and hence the common nickname for them, \u201cFivers\u201d).\u00a0 One reason they preferred Zayd was his activist revolutionary stance against the Umayyad dynasty.\u00a0 Indeed, Zayd was the first descendant of Husayn to rebel openly against the Umayyads, which led to his violent death in 740.\u00a0 Thus, their theological moderation\u2014which is actually no more than their relative doctrinal affinity to Sunnism, privileged as the norm\u2014did not entail political moderation.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nBibliography<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nUntil political events brought Shi\u2018i Islam forcibly to Western attention over the past few decades, Shi\u2018ism received relatively little attention from Western scholarship.\u00a0 But even in the recent period, scholarly work on the Zaydiyya has been comparatively sparse, perhaps because they are overwhelmingly located in remote portions of Yemen, which is itself remote and often overlooked.\u00a0 Much of the best work on the Zaydiyya has been done by a few German-speaking scholars.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
