For what it\u2019s worth, I will be speaking at\u00a0the September meeting of the Cotton Mission Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers<\/a>. \u00a0That meeting will be held on Wednesday, 18 September 2019, at the Holmstead Ranch<\/a>. Meet and greet at 5:30pm, dinner meeting starts at 6pm. Dinner is $15 per person.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

President Russell M. Nelson delivered a fairly brief but, in my judgment, a rather remarkable address in the Marriott Center on the Provo, Utah, campus of Brigham Young University. \u00a0I trust that what he said will soon be available online in various forms.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

He spoke very directly about the leadership role of today\u2019s ordained prophets and apostles, and very specifically about recent policy changes regarding the children of lesbian, gay, and transgendered couples. \u00a0I expect that what he said will be met with anger and vituperation in certain circles, but it was offered in sincerity and genuine love. \u00a0(I say that with confidence, as somebody who has known and interacted with President Nelson for quite a number of years now. \u00a0I don\u2019t want to overstate that: I don\u2019t claim that we\u2019re intimate confidantes or that we spend our free hours doing cardiac surgery together. \u00a0But I served for several years on a relatively small committee that was chaired by then Elder Nelson, and I\u2019ve had a number of contacts with him since then, both in person and in writing, and I have every confidence both that he is genuine and sincere and that he is a truly kind, loving, and caring human being.)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I can say similar things about other members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. \u00a0I say this not to boast, but I believe that the only one of them with whom I have had no personal interaction (that I can recall) is Elder Ulisses Soares. \u00a0Some of those interactions have been more substantial than others, of course, but my experience with them has strengthened my conviction that these are good men, men who sincerely and seriously attempt to discern the will of God for the welfare of their brothers and sisters.<\/p>\n
