Perhaps you don\u2019t know the story, so here\u2019s some background:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was bullied over his clothes. So classmates stepped in\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTennessee gives scholarship to boy bullied for his homemade T-shirt and welcomes him to the Class of 2032\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cUniversity of Tennessee marching band wears T-shirts designed by bullied fan\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the piece that caught my interest for this particular blog post. \u00a0It\u2019s an article written by a psychologist named Peggy Drexler:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBullied Florida boy\u2019s story is complicated\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I think that most normal people would already assume that habitual bullies \u2014 as opposed to non-bullies but also even to people, especially children and adolescents, who simply (though shamefully) join up with a bullying \u201cmob\u201d for a single event in order to feel accepted within a group \u2014 have some sort of psychological issue or issues. \u00a0And, of course, Dr. Drexler agrees.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

What I didn\u2019t<\/em> know is that (according to Dr. Drexler, anyway) habitual bullies have a considerably higher rate of suicidal ideation and of suicide.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Now, she is referring mainly if not exclusively to, once again, very young bullies, to children and teens. \u00a0But (in my opinion, anyway) social media have pretty obviously and conclusively demonstrated that bullying is far from being restricted to childhood and adolescence. \u00a0The anonymity and pseudonymity of the internet have, it seems, freed many formerly youthful bullies from societal constraints and enabled them to continue their bullying into adulthood. \u00a0With what consequences, though \u2014 I wonder \u2014 for their mental health? \u00a0For rates of suicide?<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

An interesting question, I think.<\/p>\n
