Another view \u2014 this one obviously too small \u2014 in Snow Canyon State Park<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Then we went to Central itself, past the cinder cones near Veyo (which are the focus of some rather funny family lore that I\u2019ll probably reserve for a future time). \u00a0I still have some relatives living in Central, but there was too little time to drop in on them unannounced today. \u00a0My parents even co-owned a cabin in Central for a few years, back around the time I got married.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Driving through Central, we went to Pine Valley, of which I can find no remotely adequate photograph. \u00a0It\u2019s where my mother used to go to stay with relatives when St. George was really hot in the summer. \u00a0(It\u2019s located at an altitude of 6800 feet.) \u00a0I still have relatives there. \u00a0But, again, too little time.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Settled in 1859, Pine Valley\u2019s population is still only about 200 people or so. \u00a0I took my son to see the famous Pine Valley Chapel, the oldest continuously used Latter-day Saint church in the world. \u00a0It was designed by Ebenezer Bryce, of Bryce Canyon National Park fame. \u00a0(Of the area that\u2019s now named after him, he famously remarked that it was \u201ca hell of a place to lose a cow.\u201d) \u00a0Bryce was a Scottish-born shipbuilder and, when he was asked to design the chapel, he did what he knew how to do: \u00a0He designed it more or less as an upside-down boat. \u00a0It has been in service since 1868.<\/p>\n
