New BYU study shows screen time isn\u2019t the problem.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>New research led by Sarah Coyne, a professor of family life at Brigham Young University, found that the amount of time spent on social media is not directly increasing anxiety or depression in teenagers. \u00a0However, she offers some helpful guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>The study didn\u2019t examine the beneficial impact that faithful reading of my blog can have upon mental health. \u00a0But, of course, it seems undeniably obvious that increasing time spent following my blog generates enormous benefits \u2014 and especially so to the extent that readers attempt to conform their views to mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.byu.edu\/intellect\/byu-scientists-discover-way-to-make-crops-grow-in-salt-damaged-soil\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBYU scientists discover way to make crops grow in salt-damaged soil\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"PromoCardImageOnTop-description promo-description\">A group of BYU researchers may have found a way to reverse falling crop yields caused by increasingly salty farmlands throughout the world.<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.byu.edu\/byu-created-software-could-significantly-extend-wi-fi-range-for-smart-home-devices\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cResearchers create way to significantly extend Wi-Fi range for smart-home devices\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.byu.edu\/intellect\/byu-center-for-animation-claims-sixth-student-academy-award\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBYU Center for Animation claims sixth Student Academy Award\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those were all from BYU. \u00a0The next links aren\u2019t. \u00a0And this one is concerning:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/3-billion-birds-lost-since-1970-north-america\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cWe\u2019ve lost 3 billion birds since 1970 in North America:\u00a0Scientists found profound losses among both rare and common birds\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>People want so badly to do good, to do the right thing, but sometimes what seems to be right and good actually has some serious downsides:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/614605\/sorryorganic-farming-is-actually-worse-for-climate-change\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cSorry\u2014organic farming is actually worse for climate change: The practice cuts greenhouse-gas emissions only if you ignore the inconvenient fact that it requires a lot more land.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In related news: \u00a0A fairly recent article in <em>The Economist<\/em> \u2014 arguably, perhaps, the single best magazine in the English-speaking world \u2014 discusses a trend that could significantly lower the acreage (and the number of animals) required to produce the food that we eat.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a
